What idiocy is this idiot talking about now ?....QUOTE.... Mayor de Blasio promises to sign New York City chewing tobacco ban in next two weeks

Mayor de Blasio said he will ?definitely? sign a ban on smokeless tobacco at sports arenas like Yankee Stadium and Citi Field in the next two weeks.

?It?s very important for the health of our players, and for the city as a whole,? de Blasio said on ESPN Sunday. ?Young people look up to baseball players, and they look up to all athletes, and we want to protect everyone?s health.?

And de Blasio said while the early focus would be on education and warnings, city officials will not hesitate to slap fines on Major League Baseball players who flout the rules.

?We hope it will be voluntary, but later on in the season when the law takes full effect, and all the signs are posted in the stadiums and the warnings are given, if players don?t relent we will issue fines,? de Blasio said. ?Obviously, given the money they make the fines may not be a big deal unto themselves, but it will show that we?re serious. And it?s just a wake-up call.?

he amount of the fine for violating the ban has not yet been set.

With Opening Day approaching, New York is set to become the fourth city to ban the substance from its ballparks, following Boston, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. The legislation was passed last week by the City Council.

Chewing tobacco has a long history of use in baseball ? and experts estimate 25% to 30% of current players still use it ? but it can cause cancer and other health problems.

We don?t want young people seeing the players they look up to engaging in something that?s bad for their bodies. We don?t want young people thinking that?s cool to do,? de Blasio told ESPN.

?I think education is going to have a big impact,? he continued.

?Enforcement will be there, but I think it?s much more about education and people seeing, players seeing, it?s happening all over the country. This is becoming a consensus.?...END QUOTE...w/all the things going on in NYC & around the globe this clown is worried about chewing tobacco .

I really don't think that it's such a bad thing.  It has certainly been well demonstrated that it can cause mouth and throat cancer and as the initial post said baseball players are looked up to by the younger generation in many cases.  It's not as if NYC is even leading the charge and this area.  It certainly makes a lot more sense than the banning of large drinks!

Wilhelm is afraid to tackle anything serious like crime ...drugs...etc...etc....all flash tackling chewing tobacco ?

Just another politician who needs to legislate personal choice. While the effects of tobacco cannot be disputed, I would hope that those he worries about being influenced have family role models who could model safer behavior.

Sorry, I forgot. That would require personal responsibility. Chief JK is correct, bigger fish for our leaders to fry in today's world. Paris, Brussels, where next? But the mayor of the most influential city in the world is concerned about adult professional athletes and their choices.
