Time for a Get Together

Just trying to assist in letting you gents know whats where. I'm sure, like the song says, "wherever you go, whatever you do" you will have a great time being together.

I?m not sure if I?ll be able to be at the Get Together, but two activities I?d recommend are tours of the Second Avenue Subway and the East Side Access Project (LIRR into Grand Central).  The two of them are still under construction and would be both historically noteworthy and interesting from the FD perspective (rescue ops, firefighting systems etc).  If they?d be too long for the time available, would a second Get Together be possible?

"Manhattan", I hope you can join us for at least one day. You have offered us many suggestions on here, plus the fact that you contribute to this site often. I have said this before, I know personally, many members of this site. I've met them all through these Get Together's. They all have a strong interest in the FDNY and fire departments in general. Some have traveled from many miles. Rev Elwood E, aka CFDMarshall, comes all the way from Tennessee every year. Others from places like Virginia, upstate New York, New Jersey etc. (By the way, just to get the facts correct, "CFDMarshall" is NOT really a reverend, it's a long story. Just came about on one of these gatherings - Sorry Rev, but as you know; "the Truth will set you Free")

As posted here, one of the places that may be of interest to visit is a McDonalds in Brooklyn. We can certainly do that. In fact, that was in the planning stages. Maybe instead of the McDonalds in the Bronx, we can do a Micky Ds in Coney Island in Brooklyn this year. (That McDonalds thing is another one of those stories).

The tours of course are a big part of the Get Together's. But also is the fact that many become buddies and very often keep in touch with each other. In fact, it's almost like being in the firehouse. We almost become part of a family. But for many, including myself, we are just too old to be a part of a real firehouse family. So we do the best we can. But I also want to say that we do have some younger members who have joined us. By younger, I mean, 35 years old or less. And they have proven themselves to be a credit to their generation. They have an interest in the FDNY just like us senior citizens do. "Anesti" as an example, has been a regular with us as long as he was NOT working. Good guy who works for the City of New York, in the school system, with an interest in the fire service. (I've suggested he be too sick to go to work, but okay for the Get Together - but he didn't do it).

I'm hoping that "Atlas" will help us with the Get Together of 2014. He does a great job. And a few others as they have in the past.

I will do my best to keep everybody advised on what's planned. So far only the dates, October 9 - 11, with two option days of Oct 8th or 12th.

nfd2004 - Many thanks for your kind words.  Hopefully I'll be able to be there.

And "memory master" too. You have given us a few ideas also. If you can make it, that would be great. But anyway, thank you for your thoughts and ideas.

Site Member "Irish", aka Declan, has said that he would like to join us for this years Get Together, 2014. He is booking his flight to fly across the Ocean and be with us from Oct 9th - 11th. He's been to NYC before and JohnnyD248 hosted him. I also got to meet him. Real good guy.

So Dec, glad you'll be joining us. I'm sure you'll get to meet some good people too. And maybe get to see a few of the things you didn't get to see when you were here before.

Thanks Dec, we'll see you then.

Thanks Willy D. If this trip is even half as good as our last mini get-together it will be great. Already looking forward to it and hopefully some warmer weather then the last time lol

I haven't forgotten, but I haven't contacted "Atlas" lately either, to see if he is interested in organizing this event.

The date hasn't changed. Still planning for October 9,10,11th (Thursday, Friday, Saturday).

I thought about a visit to the 9/11 Memorial on maybe one of those days. Maybe for Friday. I'm sure that would be an entire day. We could meet up and take the subway there.

Maybe Thursday do "The Rock" in the morning and the FDNY/EMS Academy in the afternoon, getting a look at a MERV etc. Maybe hit Donavon's in Queens later for chow if it's still recommended.

On Saturday morning, the Shops and the afternoon maybe the Bronx C.O. if possible. Along with a quick outside look of the new Bronx/Queens C.O. off Pelham Parkway.

  Simply put:
Thursday October 9th - The Rock in the morning and FDNY/EMS Academy in the afternoon.
Friday October 10th - World Trade Center Memorial
Saturday October 11th - The Shops in the morning and the Bronx C.O, in the afternoon

  Nothing confirmed yet though.

That looks like a good plan Willy D. Fingers crossed it can be pulled off. Lets just hope the Feds aint training / following you near the Rock this time or we might not get in again hahaha

Looking forward to Oct

Yeah, I remember that day Dec. But you should have seen the stir at the U.S. Pentagon, when myself and our good friend/site member, Mr "fdce54", aka Frank D made a visit there. Two or three other members had no problem. But under orders of machine gun carrying security personnel, we were ordered to "Leave the premises' now". And they were in no mound to hear any of Mr "fdce54"s funny jokes.

I expect to be contacting "Atlas" and hear what he has to say about our up coming Get Together. "Dec", I know you will need plenty of notice if you will be flying in for the gathering. And as the date gets closer, the airline prices start to go up. Sometimes they more than double. So I will keep that in mind.

Come on Bill. I saved your life that day ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Bill - just some more ideas - if we do go to the 9-11 Memorial, there are a lot of other possibilities in the vicinity to also consider.  The FDNY Fire Museum.  A firehouse: Squad 18 or Engine 55 or Engine 24 Ladder 5.

Maybe some non-FDNY attraction like the Ellis Island.

Some guys might want to stay an extra day and see the Jets/Denver game.  Or maybe there will be preseason basketball game at MSG or Brooklyn.

Maybe some of the potential attendees have some ideas.
