  The equipment that we were shown was a very large heavy nozzle that is supposed to be brought to the floor below the fire of a high rise building. It was also told to us that this piece of equipment is very costly. If I remember correctly it was similar to a standard deck gun carried on some engine companies to be used as master streams on a fire building. It was mounted to a heavy base apparently to be carried up several flights of stairs of a high rise fire. Then I believe to be operated in similar fashion to todays high rise nozzles.

  I don't know if that equipment is in use now, or they are still being trained in it's use.

 
 
Irish,  fltpara16 has it but the FDNY and Elkhart Brass call it the  HEROPIPE. A very very expensive device. The present HIGH RISE NOZZLE that FDNY is using is a much simpler device and much faster to get in operation but has only a limited amount of water flow capability where as the HEROPIPE is a large caliber device with a high volume of discharge.
 
a little more on the HEROPIPE.  It costs $62,000 ( sixty two thousand dollars ) per unit and was designed by a Chicago Fire fighter. Elkart Brass is now the sole manufacture of it.  According to the literature on the internet it can be operated by a two man team. Google heropipe and you can get all the details
 
That's it "auxlteng225". It was the first time that I had ever seen it. It's a pretty large and heavy unit. I do know this though, if there is any department that will put it through the test, it will be the FDNY.
 
nfd2004 Yes, FDNY is the place to give it a work out. When you compare it to the existing HRN now carried it does have certain major advantages, such as: ability to control direction of the stream for a deeper penetration of the fire floor, a much higher flow rate for greater extinguishing capabilities. But, the present nozzle seems to be doing the job and sure does cost a heck of lot less than 62 thousand. For that figure you could put the present HRN on every engine company that FDNY has and have money left over. It would have to be most likely carried by a special vehicle do to its size and probably issued to a company in each borough that is centrally located to high rise building areas. A big logistic problem as I see it. It kind of reminds me of the old water towers that the department had. They didn't see much use but when they were needed they sure did the job. Then along came the tower ladders and that was the end of them.
 
I received this very sad news second hand. I have not seen it myself but I understand that one of our honored guest at Maggie Mays, just passed away today. Supposedly, it is posted on Twitter. If it's true, I can't believe it. If anybody else has heard that, please pass it along. I hope it's just some kind of rumor.

It is with profound regret that we pass on shocking news to you---we have been advised that Firehouse Magazine Editor In Chief Emeritus, Former Tenafly NJ Fire Chief and Hon FDNY Assistant Chief Harvey Eisner has passed away from a heart attack.

We will provide additional information on this huge loss to the nation and worlds fire service. Quite honestly, there is not a single Firefighter on the streets today that Harvey didn't positively influence in his teachings, writings and amazing photography. Harvey was a dear friend to us and so many and a true Brother to all in the fire service.

Much more to follow about this man whose life was always all about doing for others. That is said about many, but that absolutely defined who Harvey was. All you needed to do was to spend a moment with him-and that statement held true forever-and will continue to hold true...forever. Chief Harvey Eisner-did so much for so many and now he is gone.
RIP.

"Irish", you did a fine job in preserving the memories of our Get Together, 2014 for us with your photos and videos. Thank you very much.

The night of that training evolution at the Great Neck Vigilant Fire Company, we got to watch the training of several young volunteer firefighters in the use of operating a power saw to open a roof and entering a window of an upper floor from an aerial ladder. There was maybe a dozen or so guys being trained, and they were trained by a young Lt in the department. That young Lt impressed everyone of us in our group. He worked well with the guys and he certainly knew his stuff. I'm sorry, but I don't remember his name. He ran that training class all by himself.

  He told a few of us that he hopes to someday become a member of the FDNY. He also told us that he is currently on the hiring list for the FDNY/EMS. I think it was very clear to all of us, how dedicated to the fire service this young man is and how he is willing to share with other younger members of the department, the knowledge he has. He was not boastful or cocky about it. He just wanted the guys to learn. ( I hate to admit it, but I think I even learned a few tips from him - although, it's a little too late now).

  I hope that the Great Neck Vigilant Fire Company gets word on how we all pretty much felt about this young Lt and the young firefighters he was training. Sometimes when I think that we have lost our entire younger generation and there is little hope left, I think about younger guys like these young members of this department. Their young Lt as their leader, and guys like Declan, aka "Irish". I then realize that we still have some really good kids left. Some that we all will be able to depend on, and we can be proud to call them our friends.
 
For our next Get Together, how about a tour of Richmond Plaza and Tracy Towers in the Bronx ? "Irish", "fltpara16", "mack", "fdce54", "CFDM... - The Rev", "G-Man", "Billy J aka ParkAve", "SVD###", You guys up to it ?

  Actually, "Irish" had mentioned it to me recently because he needs to plan his flight well in advance. I know we've been talking about having most of the events this time in Manhattan. Also we had talked about the Firefighters Yearly Memorial Service. I believe it is usually held the First Wednesday of the month. That would make it October 7th this year. It's still a long way off but that's probably the week that our Get Together will be held.

  The Anchor Hotel in Bayside queens was a decent place that we stayed in last year. So maybe this year we do the same. We could still spend some time at our Command Post, aka "Maggie Mays". We could take mass transit into Manhattan which is probably about the best thing to do. Might have to leave a little later because of commuter rush hour though. Parking and driving a car in Manhattan isn't easy either.

  One of the retired captains and a site member here mentioned about going to a favorite restaurant of his, visiting his former firehouse, plus there is the World Trade Center Memorial to see. 

  Still a long way off yet but after reading of a recent job at Richmond Plaza in the Bronx, I wondered if a few guys would be interested in touring a couple of floors there and the nearby Tracy Towers.

  ALSO: One of the younger members had mentioned to me about a Get Together for the younger guys of this site who are in school or not able to attend our October Get Togethers. I would be glad to try and help them if they wanted. I know most of them live in the NYC area.

  I tried to tell them that but they didn't think so. I told them that we are all just in our late 50s or 60s (except that "Irish" kid) and they told me their grandmothers and grandfathers aren't that old.
 
I cannot condone age discrimination in the forum or at the get togethers! :o I do like the idea of Bayside being the base of operation but I would need to check who is occupying the room next door! The train worked well for Electroman and I so that would work in my opinion! Regarding Richman towers, no reciprocity in NYC for my commission or handgun permit so I will need to ponder that one!
 
Age is  just a number ....
Aging is mandatory ... growing up is optional!!

Never having been to Richmond Plaza or Tracy Towers, it's been a long time since I visited an  Upholstered Toilet (based on information received from family living in the  Bronx), so why not, safety in numbers.

Thanks Willy D for bringing it up. Sorry for being a pain guys. Flights are getting really expensive so the earlier i book the cheaper it becomes (i'll have a few extra dollars to buy a round in Maggie Mays for you guys)

The 7th is the Wednesday of that week which will be the memorial mass on Riverside Drive. Does everyone think that may be a runner??

On Richmond Plaza and Tracy Towers ive no idea what they are so if someone could enlighten me on that lol
