Time for a Get Together

About once a year, as many already know, we like to have a little Get Together for the members of this site. Maybe a little tour during the day time and some chow later. Possibly in October, probably a weekday like a Wednesday or Thursday.

Many have been to the Rock and the Shops. But there's still a few guys that haven't been there yet and maybe we can try to get them in.

For chow, maybe "Giovannis" on Arthur Ave just south of 186th St in the Bronx. There is a city parking lot behind there and on a Wednesday or Thursday evening, I'm guessing it shouldn't be too busy.

If you have any interest in the FDNY, this site is an excellent source of information. You'll find some really great people here, all with the same interest. From the most knowledgeable Fire Buffs/Photographers to Active and Retired FDNY members. Firefighters, Fire Dispatchers, Fire Marshalls, Police Officers, EMS, Military, Teachers/Principals, those from Con Ed and those from the U.S. Postal Service. Just a group of outstanding people.

So with that said, what do you think ?

Sounds good, Bill! I for one had a great time last year at the get-together at Giovannis. It's a great spot and is pretty accessible, and within walking or driving distance of some great, busy houses. If at all possible, a trip to the Rock and/or the Shops would be fantastic as well. This site really does have some great people, all very knowledgeable.

Most likely, Wednesday October 23rd, or maybe October 30th. That gives us time to make plans. I would try to set up a tour for the Rock in the morning, and the Shops in the afternoon. They are not easy to get into these days though.

As it went in the past, we'd usually get a head count on who's coming. Not everybody would be interested in the Rock or the Shops because they've been there before. When we had the Shops tour, maybe last year, the gentleman that set it up for us was a Great Guy. I hope I can get in touch with him again. I'm sure he won't remember me, it's been a long time. On one trip we got a tour of the Bronx C.O. That's not easy to get into either, but a site member here was able to set that up.

For those who are new to the site and are interested in attending, I usually ask for their phone number and I give them mine so we can keep in touch. Some of us got lost between events, and the cell phones came in handy. Or if anybody had any questions, it was a great way to keep in contact.

At the restraunt, everybody take care of their own order. It's a pain for the waiter/waitress, but hopefully they get a decent tip for their extra work.

I recieved a message from a newer member of the site who said that he is interested. As one point of interest, we've always conducted ourselves as gentleman. There's never been any problems, yet we certainly have enjoyed ourselves. If you have a wife, or girlfriend, or boyfriend, whatever the case may be, they are certainly welcomed to join us, as long as they understand the subject to be discussed will probably be fire dept, specifically, the FDNY.

I know I said i was going to come last year, but had to back out last minute for family reasons. But Oct 23 or 30 sounds good, doubt i make the morning part as i work but would gladly like to join the afternoon/dinner par.

Bill - Sounds great - everyone I have met in person from this site have become friends.  I encourage all to try to participate.

Problem always seems to be location and timing.  NYC area is good for October.

For those who travel, it is best to make this more than 1 day.  Also, maybe combine weekday with weekend for work or schedule flexibility. Maybe a Friday/Saturday deal.

Guys then have some options.

"mack' that's a good idea, a Friday and a Saturday. Only problem could be for anybody who wanted to visit the Shops or the Rock. I don't know if we'd be able to get a tour on those days (?). And also it could be a very busy night for the Restraunt. Reservations would definately be required.

Just a point of interest, I told my boss at the p/t job I work to "go Stuff It on Saturday nights". Seeing the Boys and chasing fire trucks is much more important. So no problem for me.
"Stuff It".......... getting your Irish up are ye, Mr. Dennis?

Frank and I discussed this at length Bill and we feel we should spend some extended time in Chinatown! We think you will understand! ;D :o

Are you guys trying to put 'Mickey D's' out of business?  What would you be willing to spend for dinner?

Ohhhhhhhh, with "Slick Willie"..........lol.

I forgot Frank maybe a visit to Harlem for a little inspiration! Be tough to do Chinatown and Harlem in one day! Could you drive us Willie D?

Atlas, I am very happy that you brought that up about Micky D's, because for the members who are somewhat early risers, I was hoping we could meet up at our favorite Mickeys on Fordham Rd and Southern Blvd in the Bronx.  Then if all goes well, from there, those who would like travel to visit The Rock or the Shops, if that could be arranged.

Also, as "mack" pointed out, probadly a Friday and Saturday would be best. A quick look and maybe Friday Oct 18th and Saturday Oct 19th as maybe a good time. So meet up at Micky Ds the two mornings for coffees and McMuffins, then Friday night some Great Italian Food.

Now, about that Chinatown and "Harlem Inspiration" thing. We would be HONORED if the Most Reverend CFDMarshall, would attend coming in all the way from Tennesse, could lead us in prayer at our gathering. Also for those who would like to hear what it was like growing up in the South Bronx as a kid, our own site member, Frankie "Me Irish Lad" himself, "fdce54", promises to tell his story in both English, or for those who prefer, in Chinesse language.

Gentlemen, as I look back on that fine day, I remember it was Opening Day at Yankee Stadium. It was also Opening Day at that new McDonalds on River Ave (?) too. I wanted to try out a few Big Macs and fries so that is what was in that big McDs bag. Before that McDs, it was a White Castle bag full of White Castle Sinkers from Webster Ave. Some of you may remember that place.

And guess what ! I still got into the ballgame and DIDN'T have two forms of Government I need. All I needed was my Report Card from grammer school. They said if you were able to pass just one subject, you could get in. Well Gentlemen, guess who went to the game that day. I didn't pass to the next grade, but I got into Yankee Stadium.

Now, we got to get serious on this Get Together thing. October 18th and 19th will be here before we know it. I hope to contact somebody from the shops this coming week. He hasn't heard from me since our last visit about two or three years ago. I'm sure he won't remember me but I think I still have his Email address. For our visit to the Rock, I'm hoping that Lt Tommy B (site owner) can help us out with that. Those of us that made the visit last time, know that he was a part of that.

As I remember too, we collected donations from the members who attended these functions. Retired Chief JK (site member) made a recommendation that we make a donation to the Wounded Warriors Fund and to the 9/11 Families, which we did in appreciation for the FDNY members giving us this tour. Hopefully we can do that again and if Chief JK can pass on the required info for that.

For anyone looking to stay in the NYC area, I have stayed at two Ramada Inns in the past. One in the Bronx near Co Op City and one in Yonkers. Both were okay. If I stay, I will probadly stay at the one in Yonkers because it's just a little cheaper. If there are any bad reports about the one in Yonkers, I'm sure "Truck 4" would know about it. So Sgt, let us know okay.

I would like to be able to set up the visit to the Rock on Friday and the Shops on Saturday, if that is possible. For those looking for a place to eat on Saturday evening, Donovans in Queens at Roosevelt and 59th St (?) would also be a good place.

We try to do this once a year when the entire site group is invited to get together. It's really a good time and there's plenty to talk about. Every one of us from a different background but a common interest. And I can honestly say that everybody on here that I have met, is really a great guy. I'm sure others feel the same way too.

And thanks Tommy for setting this site up and allowing it all to happen. You don't ask for one dime. Without you, none of this would be possible. I think we all really appreciate what you've done for us. I hope you can make it for our get together.

Believe that would be "grammar school".  Willy D is better at Mickey D's than spelling.  LOL

John, everybody knows I did that on purpose. I was just trying to see if you would katch that spelling airer. By the way, I hope you're planning on being at the Get Together.

The signal 6-5-2 has been transmitted. Stand by for a "Get Together" message.

  Message is as follows;

A few site members have a few different ideas on what to do and where to visit. For now the dates have NOT Changed. It is still Friday and Saturday, Oct 18th and 19th. But everything is still in the planning stages and as soon as there are more details, they will be posted.

The dates for the Get Together have not changed. It still looks like Oct 18th and 19th. However, it looks like most of the gatherings will take place in the Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island area this year. There are a few guys working on a few things to make that possible. As a group we have not been to that area of the city yet.

For a guy like "Johnny D 248", there shouldn't be a problem. But now take a guy like "mikeindabronx". If he wants to attend this year, he will need to update his passport to travel from Da Bronx to these foreign lands.

It is a land where all the Engine Companies and some Ladder Companies have Three digit numbers. Sometimes I have trouble remembering two. For some of us, trying to remember our own home zip code is always a challenge. We hope that a three digit unit number will not discourge anyone who would like to attend.

And by the way, for those who don't know this, that's why our good friend Johnny D has the number "248" in his user name. Hopefully, so he doesn't forget it.

Just to stir the pot. Those companies with three digit numbers aren't good enough to have two digit numbers. Now let me get under the table :o :o :o :o

There is some talk that "fdce54" may be one of the guest speakers explainly the two and three digit numbering system in Chineese language for those who would perfer. And Willy D will talk about the flooding conditions he faced recently at his favorite Micky Ds. Johnny D248 may lecture on his secret to remembering three digit numbers. And it is hoped that the Most Rev CFDMarshall will lead us in prayer service. All this, plus our regular scheduled events, soon to be announced.
