Time for a Get Together

Maybe seeing SOC on Roosevelt Island? There's plenty of rigs there that a lot of people don't even know exist. There's also the Coast Guard Station on Staten Island. I have no idea what  it's like trying to get in there but just throwing out ideas. Also maybe the Academy on Randall's Island? Or the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

I spoke to a FDNY chief tonight & he MIGHT be able to come as a speaker to one of our dinners. If so, he might be able to answer a few of your questions.  Still at work looking to full in a few blanks.... Any ideas?
First Sir, Thank You, for all your work to make this great trip possible, and enjoyable and informative.

Just a thought: I think    Marine 3 operates one of the smaller Fast-Boats out of a Dock located behind Kingsboro Comm. Coll. in Sheepshead Bay. I think they are one of the [i'Seasonal Boats' [/i] operating during NY's Boating Season, and I heard them 'on the air' Today, but I don't Know if they'll be there in October [?].
That location is directly across the Bay from the Hotel at Nostrand & Emmons Ave. [!].
So...'food for thought'... Also, Eng. 321 is only approx. a Mile, [ maybe Less], from the Hotel.
As you may know, that Co. was heavily-involved & severely-impacted by 'Sandy'. [ the Brush Fire
Unit assigned to that House was one of the apparatus destroyed by The Storm], I'll bet
They have a few 'Sandy Stories' to tell... And, Eng. 246 /TL169 are right down the road off of Emmons Ave at Shore Pkwy, so...??
[I'm a Brooklyn & Breezy Pt. Boy & know my way around down there very well. But, i haven't been back to Brooklyn in a 100yrs. so i don't know if anyone i knew {FDNY} still work there!]
Just puttin' some ideas 'out there' for your consideration...staj.  ;)

"Atlas", you have done a Great job, even though you threw me a few shots along the way. You really are a good person and willing to go way beyond what we first asked of you. For those who don't really know, I know that "Atlas" is involved in many programs to support the FDNY members. Thanks again Ken.

As I look at the schedule already posted, I just wonder how we will be able to move along on schedule as it is. I think to go visit anyplace else would just about be impossible. From past experience and other Get Togethers, I know sometimes we run over our time schedule. "Atlas" tells me that it is my job to run the stop watch and advise when it is time to move on. Sometimes that's hard to do because the FDNY members or others like talking to..."US". We all come from many different backgrounds.

I think "Atlas" has done a great job setting things up. He did EVERYTHING. But there's only 24 hours in a day. So let's leave as it stands. I honestly think we could spend a full week touring the FDNY and still be missing something. As I see it, it is just a pretty big place with a lot to see. Anybody else that would like to join us, just send me a message on here. Let me know your name and a phone number, and I'll give you a call.

I will also say this. Except for one person who I am looking forward to meeting, I know all of those planning to attend so far. They all represent the BEST. No doubt about it.

Willy D -THANKS FOR YOUR NICE COMMENTS! I GUESS I OWE YOU A FEW BIG MAC'S!!!! Just kidding.

As I write this there is a second alarm fire only a few blocks from the hotel at the famous Lundy's Restaurant. The hotel is located in an area that is the home to a few fishing boats, just in case a any of the guys want to stay an extra day or two.

I am aware of the companies in the area & that Marine 3 is near-by. I am not sure if Marine 3 will be in service during the tour, but you will be seeing Marine 9-A which is the same type of vessel. There will be more trips in the future so that we can see SOC & some of the other hidden secrets of FDNY. Currently due to a rehab of their station Eng 309 is running from Eng 321's quarters.

If you guys want, we can do a ride through the Coney Island area one evening after dinner - no extra charge for that!!!!

How many of you have seen either covers of WNYF or Fire House with the same photo of the firefighters walking through the water of SANDY? Well the photo was taken around the corner from the hotel. There is a very good chance that the person who took the photo will meet up with the tour & present a signed copy to each of you.

STATEN IS is the home to two major USCG facilities with Coast Guard Station NY - is on  the waterfront of the Upper Bay, just north of the V.Z. Bridge in Station Island being one of them. The station received heavy damage during Sandy forcing their vessels to work from Marine 9's pier for several months. In the past year there has been a change in command & I have not met the new Lt. Commander who is in charge. But again, there is always 'NEXT  YEAR'.

With all the different rigs at SOC, you could spend most of the day there, but this year we do not have the time for this visit.  So please
keep sending your ideas in so we can work on the following years plans.

Unfortunately, I won?t be able to attend, but it wouldn?t be right not to congratulate everyone who?s taken so much time and put in so much effort and thought to make this event something really exceptional. Keep up the good work which makes this site so special.

Hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable time and learns something new.

Me, too.  I wish I could make it, but I'm going to be in the mountains of West Virginia that weekend.  Best of luck to everyone involved, and have a great time.

Lundy's . . . the Brass Rail . . . just thinking about them makes my mouth water.  Wish I could have a Nedick's orange to help satisfy the itch.  Well, at least I can get Sabrett's hot dogs here in VA . . .  but it's not quite the same as getting one fresh out of the hot water of the vendor's cart, with a soggy roll and lots of mustard, relish & sauerkraut.  (Would anyone guess that at the moment I'm hungry?)

Ray,
We still call them "Dirty Water Dogs"!  I guess some things don't change. Stopped at Nathans one night - two dogs, a french fry & a soda cost almost $20. each dog there goes for $3.95.....

Sorry you are not coming, hope to meet you on another trip, but please enjoy YOUR trip into God's Country.

"Raybrag" and "Manhattan", we enjoy reading your post on here. Sorry that you guys can't make it. But do us all a favor, please. "Don't make any plans for next October (2014)". Let's hope that the Good Lord keeps us around and that we can all do it again. This time you guys joining the party too.

I also know that two or three members of this site may not be able to take the tour with us, but hopefully they may be joining us for one of the dinners at Fort Hamilton. One who is a good friend to many of us. A retired War Years Captain from the FDNY.

This is probably the third or fourth Get Together for us. And here's a "Blast from the Past". One of the highlights from the past Get Togethers was when "CFDMarshall" won the "Autographed Collectors Photo" from the raffle we had. I remember site member "fdce54" sitting next to him at the table when he opened that prize. The look on both their faces was a moment I won't soon forget. "CFDMarshall" is the ONLY One to have a once in a lifetime photo like that. Once again, Congradulations "CFDM..." on your winnings. Anybody else remember that one ?

And Coney Island, home to the Famous Nathans Hot Dogs, and a 50s song called "Coney Island Baby". Do - You - Remember ?

If you tour Coney Island there's always E245/TL161 to visit. Their firehouse was flooded in Sandy. The captain on duty that night was saying how they all went upstairs and they kept watching the water coming up the steps. Pretty crazy stuff!

SANDY was bad in Coney Island, the water from the bay & ocean met down near Eng 245's quarters. They took a bad beating, some of the highrise buildings in the area are still having problems.

NFD, did you know that the "Excellents" who recorded "Coney Island Baby" were from the Bronx? One end of the city singing about the other end of the city. ;)

"memory", I knew of the group the Excellents" but didn't know they were from the Bronx. Maybe they should have called that song my "Bronx Zoo Baby" instead of my "Coney Island Baby". But just something about that, it just doesn't sound the same. I bet "mikeindabronx" would have no problem with that though, right Mike !

An early Congradulations there, Grandpa Grumpy.

Anesti, sounds good. Just keep in touch and let us know. If you can only make it Saturday, thats fine. If you want, there should be enough cars, so use the MTA.
Just let us know as soon as you can (by Oct 1st though), so we can make plans for the dinner count, etc.

Thanks "mack" for taking the time to post those stories and videos of the upcoming "Get Together".

There's a lot to see, as you point out. And we'll see you then.

Anybody still interested, please contact me (NFD2004-aka Willy D) by Oct 1st so that we can make the final plans for dinner etc.

Maybe we will be able to get Willy D. to try Roll N Roaster in place of Mickey D's
