Vacuum Truck

I know FDNY gets Con-Ed when they need a Vacuum truck but how come these never bought there own like this one?

It's probably much more efficient to use one from public works.  They use them regularly so they are kept in good running order and have multiple units that are already distributed between the boroughs.  FDNY would probably only have 1 or 2 and they would never be very close to where you needed them.  Also if they sit and are used on a regular basis their vacuum seals dry out and they are not as effective as one that is used regularly.

Pulling soil out of a collapsed trench is a good one. Mud out of  a trench or sewer.

.......  At the double fatal LODDs in the BX 99 CENT Store (continued REST IN PEACE Lt Carpluk & FF Reilly) a vacuum truck was also used to suck up a large amount of airesol cans that had fell into the cellar during the collapse of the first fl.

Yes, the FDNY needs at least two Vacuum Trucks. As you see below Chicago FD has unit 5-2-4.
CFD, I believe refurbished a used Vacuum Truck for theirs. I also think that both L.A.F.D. and Miami FD have one each. While we are at it FDNY should look into having Rescue Cranes like the ones in L.A.F.D., Washington D.C. and Miami all have. L.A.F.D. calls their cranes "Heavy Rescures" Internet Photos Below. DEP Sewers and the MTA Track and Grates cleaning. Both have these trucks if they're available have them respond. If not maybe buy it from these agencies once they are done and refurbish them.

Hate to say it …but the idea of the SOC compressor is a little obsolete . All the rescues , collapse rigs , and squads 2nd piece have on board compressor’s.…either 180 or 200 CFM. The only thing the compressor unit Carrie’s that is unique is all the hose extensions and tubing that goes on the end of the Con-Ed vac truck to extend the reach of trucks large diameter flex hose.

NYC has money to throw around when they want...... the FDNY should not have to deal with refurbished equipment IF they were to be assigned a full time Vac Truck it should be a new one....actually the present system may be sufficient having the Utility provide it ?

Yeah and it needs the hose if not can’t really use it

Like already stated.…the TAC‘s are already busting at the seams. The hoses carried by the compressor unit are 8” LDH semi- hard flex hose and smaller 4” flex hose. Can’t be rolled up or stored flat or in a compartment. Not easily transported .

Years ago there was a trench job on the north shore of Long Island close to the city line . It was more of a “slide-in”type of entrapment. They were installing cesspool rings in very sandy soil . Mostly “step excavating“ and a “slide-in“ a cured trapping one work waste deep. A few Nassau County Tec-Rescue teams were on the scene …they sured up as best as they could and were using a vac truck from the local town . Because of the ”step excavation “ the vac truck needed be very close to the lip of the excavation in order for the boom and telescopic hose to reach the work area. They had the victim dugout to about just below his knees when the vibration of the vac truck caused a secondary slide in and re-buried the victim back up to mid-thighs. At that pointed they requested mutual aid form the FDNY….they basically just really needed the vac truck hose extension that the SOC compressor carries. The FDNY sent R-4 , CR-4, a Tac unit , Soc Compressor , Res Batt , and I believe the local Batt and even 1&1 to assist in the removal. FDNY SOC worked hand and hand with NC Tec-Rescue teams to safely remove the victim.

Since that incident , Nassau county has acquired the needed vac truck hoses and needed extension and is carried by one of its Tec-Rescue teams. So yea , the those vac truck hose & extension are definitely needed .
