Just after 5:30AM, the Valley Stream Volunteer Fire Department was notified for smoke coming from a store on Rockaway Avenue in the heart of downtown. Upon arrival of Chief of Department Scanlon, a Signal 10 (working fire) was quickly transmitted bringing mutual aid from surrounding towns. It was quickly determined the fire was located in the rear of the stores and had allready extended to the cockloft of multiple business at the intersection of Rockaway Avenue and W Lincoln Avenue. The cockloft is the common space between the ceiling and the roof shared by multiple stores. The fire ended up going to a 5th Alarm, bringing fire department from around the south shore to assist. Five handlines were put into operation to extinguish the fire, as well as briefly using two tower ladders and a ladder pipe. The fire destroyed four stores and damaged one other. Three firefighters were transported for injuries sustained. Engine 342 and Tower Ladder 345 were first due. The fire is under investigation by the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office. Firefighters operated on scene for over five hours under the command of Chief of Department Scanlon.
