"Another D.C. Fire Department vehicle broke down on the way to an emergency.
It happened to a ladder truck headed to a fire at a Southeast apartment building Thursday night.
The fire was serious enough to warrant two ladder trucks. Truck 16 for the front of the building, truck eight to evacuate the rear.
Truck 8 never made it.
Luckily truck 16 put out the fire, but in a statement Firefighters Union President Ed Smith asks what about next time?
The answer to that question is not pleasant.
The firefighters union says because of the latest breakdown ladder Truck 16 is now the only fully functional pumper truck east of the river.
Over the past few months the D.C. Fire Department has been slammed repeatedly by a report calling into question the department's ability to respond to a major crisis because its vehicles were poorly managed."
