Whittier is a really unusual town. ALL of its 272 inhabitants live in one building . . . a high rise condominium . . . and the only land access is through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, which is shared by a two lane highway and the Alaska Railroad. A traffic control system ensures that cars entering the tunnel will be able to pass without encountering a train.
