Information from Winchester Fire Department on Facebook
On the early afternoon of Thursday, December 12th, 2024, Winchester Fire Department was dispatched to the area of Watson and Brown St on reports of a residential structure fire. Upon arriving on scene, crews were met with an aggressive fire that was rapidly progressing. Engine 4’s crew made an aggressive offensive attack on the fire. While inside the structure Firefighter Rick Sanders began to feel unwell and exited the residence. Medics quickly tended to Firefighter Sanders and moved him to the ambulance. During their assessment, Firefighter Sanders went into cardiac arrest. Quick and aggressive action was taken to reverse this and Firefighter Sanders was transported to St Vincent Randolph hospital where he succumbed to his illness.
Firefighter Rick Sanders served his community faithfully and diligently for the majority of his adult life. He is survived by a wife, Billie, 4 children and 4 grandchildren with another grandchild on the way. His sacrifice for his community will never be forgotten.
Rick, from your brothers at WFD, we love you, we will miss you, and we thank you for paying the ultimate sacrifice for us and for the community around you.
We thank every department and service who has aided us throughout this process.
Rest in peace 4510, we will carry your legacy with us.
