3/20/2010 Engine 161 in the News Again

So let me get this straight, if they shut down the Engine Co but keep the Lad.
What is supposed to happen when the Ladder arrives 1st due, in there 1st due and have no DAMN water to protect the brothers. These FF's will still do what they do BEST and that is SAVE lives but pray to God that brothers will not have to be lost because of a closed down firehouse....
There is so many other NYC offices, services that are abused or just a waste, shut them down, not PD/FD in the #1 Targeted City in the World!!!!! I don't have much more to say, that I am allowed to on here, this maked me so PISSED, can't wait to the day that which ever stupid ass politician behind this, house/apt catches fire, he makes it out and leaves behinds his kids (which he probaly would), see's them at the window calling for help, he called 911, but no one is there yet, still not there, as his kid drops to the floor and the window that he was at is engulfed in flame, Here comes the Engine,
Well.......If the Orginal Firehouse kept open ---Could of been avoided. Bottom Line.
This is when I wish I could use some of my BKLYN connections and lets just say " talk to some politicians and persuade them to change there minds"  To many camera's and snakes out there today!!!                  ----   ROBERT DeMeo

rdm: just a thought, there remains several Ladders in the NYC that have run out of their own firehouse alone for many years Ladder's 3, 8 , 20, 25, 79, 102 & 116 etc. That argument probably wouldn't flush to well but, i understand what you mean and agree with the rest of your statement.

The other interesting thing about Staten Island is the formation/additional need for an Engine (168) some years ago and now they want to shut one down.

Typical municipal government stupidity

The difference with single ladder companies like L3, L8. L20, L25, L79 is that the nearest engine is less than a 1/2 mile away. In the case of L81, E152 & E160 are at least a mile away and E159 is more than that. There is also the narrow 2 lane winding streets that E152 & 160 have to drive through to get into the South Beach area. South Beach is right on the coast where high winds are prevalent meaning that even a small a fire in a bungalow can be whipped up to a major conflagration in a couple of minutes while L81 stands there waiting for water.

Capt,
I was well aware of the single Lad Co's, just in the area of SI, espicially if a brush fire or a Second or higher was at the Northern end of the Island. That Ladder will be alone for some time, that's all Im saying. Plus now the second due engine has to answer all the additional EMS alarms so they will even be more unavailable.

And just one comment about a politician house catching on fire, it might happen but they will NEVER shut down the engine company that protects there house. Look at Bloomberg his first due engine company is Engine 44, when he disbanded the 6 engine companies in 2003, 44 engine was on the list however they were not disbanded but upgraded to a Hazmat Engine.

I know what im about to say is a touchy subject among Firefighters as they give larger departments a way to lay guys off..... but have FDNY ever considered Quints??

I believe they tried them; TL14 & TL163? I think they were American LaFrance rear-mount buckets with pumps. This was back in the late 80's - 90's.

I personally loathe them. They are way too big, expensive, heavy, usually can only accomodate a small water tank (200-300 gals.), which is just enough to get you in big trouble. I'll take a Ladder without a pump anyday.

All of our Ladders have pumps etc. except for our tractor drawn. Recently, the Ladder that runs out of my firehouse was sent alone to a car fire while we were on an EMS run. We went available and were then dispatched to assist them, Ladder ran out of water and the hydrant was not close.

The 3 neighboring Cities to the west of us have Ladders with no pumps, their Departments put out fires just as good as we do.

FDNY has never tried quints, Lad 14 and 163 had engine companies in quarters and operated as Ladder companies only. Rigs were purchased with pumps due to design not tryout. They also didnt last too long in FDNY and both were replaced. L-14 tried Sutphen and ALf ladder towers both had pumps. L 163 had the alf and L 119 had the 2nd Sutphen.

There was a proposed experiment in the late 70's-early 80's that never got off the ground that would've had a couple of Quints assigned to outlying companies. I remember reading that E164/L84 and E70 on City Island were among the targeted companies but it never happened. This was not the CFC program. If I get the time I'll dig through my personal "Collyer's Mansion" and see if something surfaces.  ::)

The biggest problem with a quint to the fire service and the men, is politicians see them as a way to cut staffing levels. Everything on a rig is computer controlled, very very complex. Many quints are far to large for some area's of NYC and there extra weight load will take a heavy toll on the truck's suspension due to the NYC city roadways and run-counts. Quints are basically like my Dad, "Jack of all trades, but a master of none." Plus once you set a Quint up, let's say it's first due at a hydrant, and it's needed later for exterior attack, it's usually not going anywhere and it's stuck at that hydrant. In area's as large as NYC etc, I just see a Quint as a money-saver. There's too much pride in the Ladder and Engine, to take that away from fireman, especially the FDNY. There would be no competition between the Ladder and the Engine. If ya dig what I'm saying.  ;D

In response to baileyjeff , back in the 70's Boston had a severe deficit problem. The mayor, who was a complete as#$%le would not balance the budget. His political ambitions was to run as the VP during the presidential election. So he decided to cut companies. First company cut Engine 10. A little history, the mayor's wife liked slime yellow and seeing as how they were first due, guess what? Right Engine 10 was the first yellow rig in Boston. As a historical bit of info, this house was later shown in Spencer:For hire ;D

bailey i though engine 44 was to be disbanded and move squad 252 there so they can have an extra squad in Manhattan due to  9/11, but i think fdny brass said of they did that there would be one less engine company in bed stuy, so they just ended up coverting 44 to a haz tech unit.

Anesti I'm unsure of all the facts on that, but if you search youtube for that squad 252 video. There is a portion about that whole scenario as to where Squad 252 would be re-assigned to after 9/11. I remember watching and there was a big turnout of local supporters who petitioned against 252 being relocated. Check it out.
