Mayor should be fired as well.

Let the finger pointing and damage control begin.

This is just me, but I doubt an extra 1000 people would have made a difference. If you added a small army, they may have had a fighting chance at the first sign of the fire.

It's been a long, sad fall of the great LAFD.

In July, 1964, The National Board of Fire Underwriters (after a six months evaluation) declared that LAFD continued to be the only city with a population over 500,000 in the United States with a Class 1 rating. After that Chief Engineer William L. Miller (1956-1965) further cut the deficiency points by half to lowest ever recorded by the NBFU.

Afterwards, through the 1970's LAFD was considered by city managers in the US to be the model of excellence.

During his tenure as Chief Engineer, Miller increased the number the number of deputy chiefs from one to seven. Typically, they were known in the firehouses as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

When he became Chief in 1956, the greatest fire disaster potential in LA was felt to be the multi-million dollar homes with wood shingle roofs then under construction in the Santa Monica Mountain range from the Hollywood Hills through Bel-Air to the Pacific Palisades.
