After Engine 17 disbanded in 1991, which Fire apparatus was used as the engine company before Engine 15 was the replacement for Engine 17? Was it a reserve unit that had stick on numbers?

They were disbanded in 1991 There was no Engine Company on Pitt St Until E15 moved there in November of 2001

If a company was disbanded they are not going to staff another company in the mean time.

Could you please explain how the unstaffed engine worked in terms of firefighting aside from fire suppression as in firefighter response?
It basically stored in the fire house or outside the fire house. Used for a few special events.

The 25 Reserve Engine companies and 10 Reserve Trucks (Numbers might have changed recently) are fully equipped at all times and are quartered with regular companies citywide. They are put into service on short-term basis when needed and operate as a regular company when in-service.

Years ago there was a Reserved Engine staffed at the Brooklyn Navy Yard for a shooting of a movie & they transmitted a job there when a movie trailer caught fire I believe

A reserve ( not a spare ) engine or truck are fully equipped apparatus that are stored strategically throughout the city , generally where they have room to store them. The engines are numbered in 500’s example 501,502 ex. The ladders (trucks) are numbered 700’s , 701,702 ex. The purpose of them is that they can be put in service in a relatively quick time, used for special events like New Years Eve, United Nation week , 4th of July ( When the 4th used to be a very busy night fire wise .) or natural disasters, hurricanes, snow blizzard, sever flooding, black outs . They just have to hire the personnel to staff them. The regular fire company that the reserve apparatus is housed in is responsible to maintain and inspect the rig on a regular basis , and are usually the ones that get the call to staff it first when needed. Hope that helps to explain their purpose.
