Engine 15 original firehouse

When Engine 15 was going to be the replacement engine for 17 after a decade without an active engine company at ladder 18, why was the opening for the original firehouse apparently getting too narrow for newer apparatus? I have been curious to figure it out.

15s quarters was very tight but the rig fit , they originally temporarily moved 15 to “repair” quarters and never returned. Building was sold to Henry street settlement a local non profit for one dollar.

There are a few other firehouses built during the same time period, still in operation with the same issue of a narrow bay door,
