    I can certainly understand a large department having its own diesel mechanic(s) but I do question the need for a department to have its own tow truck. If you look at the price of one large enough the price is huge and it won't be used very often. I can't agree with having a department own one.

    It depends on the situation and what they need to handle it. If rescues are needed they operate as a truck company but normally because only a light force was dispatched it's a minor fire and they operate as a engine company.

    Another insight I read elsewhere was that Boeing said they were paid less than surrounding departments because they ran significantly fewer calls. While this is true, the potential hazards they face are significant.

    Course there was also the one in Atlanta that shut down an interstate and they ended up filling in to get the interstate open again quickly and they were planning on rebuilding the bridge in sections to keep interstate flowing.
