Chicago,IL On Duty Firefighter's Wife, 3 Children Critically Injured In Fire 3/7/2023

This very sad incident reminded me of a similar tragic fire. In 1981, FF Dennis Peterson, L 80, responded to a Mariners Harbor SI fire. L 80 was 1st due truck and Dennis was first up a ladder into a heavily involved occupied building fire late at night. He made a difficult search and rescued...

    Pre-VN Bridge - In the 1950s, E 161 and E 152 both had WLF quads. E 152, E 161 and E 160 were single engine houses. SI also had 2 South Shore ladder companies with quads - L 76 and L 82.

Even though location is close to VN, I would think E163, E 153, E 155 maybe E 159 might arrive faster than any Bklyn company using the VN. But maybe?

    NYPD.

Dropping standards because you fail to meet recruiting goals is never a good solution. The problem is not the run. The problem is failure to attact and retain qualified NYPD officers. Mayber better pay and better support for police officers will attract qualified candidates.

That ihappens for SQ8 and other SI companies - E 158, E 168, E 151/L 76, E 164/ L 84 - especially when normally assigned 2nd due companies are unavailable. At the recent 4th Alarm in Annadale, E 167 was OOS and E 162 has an accident. E 164 was only engine at this well involved fire for a while.

Special well-done to all units involved with this very difficult fire. Best wishes for recovery of injured. Also, special well-done for first arriving companies, especially when 2 first alarm engines were unavailable (167, 162). South Shore SI companies are spread thin. The 23 Bn had this...

Stats and Trends - Chart FDNY Civilian Fire Deaths by year 1960 thru 2020

If you look at the numbers on this chart, civilian fire deaths jumped significantly in the late 1960s (start of War Years) and stayed high through the 1970s and 1980s. Then, civilian fire deaths dropped as the 1990s began and returned to pre-1968 levels. Fewer fires would be a factor but it...
