B-25 STRUCK EMPIRE STATE BLDG 70 YEARS AGO

The reason Engine 3 responded later is that they used to be located further away than they are today. On that day they were coming from at 417 W. 17th St. off of 10th Ave.

    LADDER 8 and THE GHOSTBUSTERS

3rd bay at E7/L1 house used to be Ladder 1's bay when it was first opened in 1905 then taken over by the Fire Museum before it was moved to E30 house Spring St. Back in the early 70's there was room on the 2 bay apparatus floor for Eng. 7, Tower Ladder 1 and Ladder 10's tiller rig.

    The War Years

Yes, I've been too busy to make in-depth comments. I'm glad the "buff" part of his story was mentioned. Notice how Berkowitz put an asterisk on Bx. box 2245 @River Ave. & 151st St. That box was about 4 blocks from where he worked at the Bronx General Post Office. I wonder if he set that one? ::)

E310's Quad (Shop #2613) was originally assigned to E96 then swapped for E310's 1951 Ward LaFrance (#2609) and it served at 310 until it was reassigned to E323 and E310 got E323's 1953 Ward LaFrance (#3305).

Ladder 38 was the only 1953 ALF to get a WLF tractor because of a major MVA and it was reassigned to the old "Rock" on Welfare Island. A couple of '53 ALF's got 1969 Mack tractors (5, 53) and L39's ex-L24 1948 ALF.

That rig was the first metal Seagrave aerial, Shop #354 that started out as L-110 until 1960 then went to L-155, then to L-40 in 1965 then to L-117 in 1966 and to L-167 in 1968. The tractor is a 1948 Ward LaFrance. The difference between 1947 & '48 WLF tractors was the large spotlight in the...

According to the Alex Donchin book, "FIRST DUE", this was a 3rd alarmer on March 26, 1960. "Fire was in rear of a a heavily stocked warehouse had been touched off by burglars who rifled safe." Box 372 @Flushing & Bedford Aves., back then, response could've been E211, E209 & E230 with L102...

      When E214 moved in with L111 in 1948, they had to swap their 1000gpm Ahrens-Fox for E222's 1920's 700gpm American LaFrance. ;)

This was actually 2 firehouses as the 2 bays on the left were for the 2 sections of Engine 7, each section having a pumper and a hose wagon. The right side was for Ladder 1 with their own housewatch desk, etc. and was separated from E-7 by a brick wall. The N.Y.C. Fire Museum took over Ladder...

    A LOOK BACK.

Just about everyone knows that 49 Beekman St. was the former quarters of E32 before E6 was moved in there but few know that the firehouse was originally built for Eng. 7 and E-7 was there from June 15, 1903 to Dec. 31, 1905 when they moved to stately "Duane Manor". Meanwhile Engine 32 was at...

    A LOOK BACK.

Firehouse at 1781 Monroe Ave. built in 1915 was originally lettered for Engine 42 and Ladder 50 and the "LADDER 50" was still on it when I was in junior high school in the early 1960's. I remember the current E71/L55/D6 firehouse was originally proposed for E41/E71/L55/Bn26 and when it was...

The aerial was a 1933 Walter 75 ft., Engine was a 1937 Mack 1000gpm which were the first closed cab pumpers and also the first to be delivered with NYC subway straps. The hose wagon was a 1929 FWD. Note the sign on the firehouse only says Hook & Ladder 28. That is because the firehouse was...
