    There was no mandatory retirement age until about 1956. I recall a good friend of the family, LT John Gillen, E48, being forced to retire when the rule went into effect. I believe he was already past 70 years if age.

    1978 was also the year the NYC welfare laws were revised. Recipients no longer went to the head of the line for public housing when they burn their apartments out. Runs across the entire FDNY droped markedly from '78 to '79. Ya think the genius pols could have figured out this cause and effect...
