Mayor bans employees/volunteer firefighters from responding from work

Here's an interesting article from the Fire Critic blog: http://firecritic.com/2013/12/05/spring-valley-ny-mayor-bans-employeevolunteer-firefighters-from-responding-to-calls/. Seems that the mayor of a small village in upstate New York has banned his employees who are also volunteer...

New Apparatus Purchased As a Result of Hurricane Sandy

It seems like an awful lot of equipment is being purchased as a result of the experiences during hurricane Sandy.  That was a very rare occurrence and it seems like much of the specialized equipment will either be long gone before such a storm happens again or prove inadequate to produce much of...

    More problems for Detroit!

Detroit file for bankruptcy this afternoon.  I'm sure that will cause even more strain on fire department resources. Here's the story: http://money.cnn.com/2013/07/18/news/economy/detroit-bankruptcy/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

    Buying binge?

Certainly sounds like FDNY is buying binge!  New Hazmat tech units, foam tenders, Field comm units, EMS station relocation trailers and MSU units.  Many being completely new units either in style or quantity instead of one-for-one replacements of existing equipment.  Sounds like there's going to...

    Port Authority FD

I hadn't seen that posted before, although I had read about the fine.  Just what New York needs, another big headed agency!  They should just let FDNY take over the fire duties at the airport.  Instead of creating another whole organization, it certainly makes more sense from both an...

    How Rochester blocked WBC!

Firefighters in Rochester/Monroe County had a unique way to block the protests of Westboro Baptist Church during the procession for the West Webster firefighters funeral!  Looks like it worked quite effectively.

    Chicago FD Squads

It will be interesting to see how the booms work out since they will be the first was produced.  I have to believe that a lot of reengineering will have to be done to the ones used for AARF in order to meet the safety requirements for the manned bucket.

    USS Enterprise Retires

Not only will the catapults not be steam powered but the entire ship will have nothing run by steam so much of the piping recording traditional carriers be eliminated.  In addition this class of carrier will require far fewer Sailors to operate.

26 killed in ferry accident in Hong Kong!

I know they have a large fleet of fire/rescue boats but this still had to be a major undertaking especially at night! http://www.cnn.com/2012/10/01/world/asia/china-ferry-crash/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

    CFD Snorkel Squads

Grumpy, I was just watching the video from the 5-11 and they requested that the spare snorkel from Engine 35 quarters!  Is this a possible 4th snorkel for rebuilding or is it something else?

    CFD Snorkel Squads

The biggest reason is probably that none of the north American equipment builders that bid on contracts for Chicago and other cities uses the snorkel type equipment built by foreign companies!  There are a very limited number of Bronto's and Metz's in North America and those are mostly in Canada.

    CFD Snorkel Squads

Where are they getting more and more snorkels?  You don't have your location in your information.  Where are they getting the snorkels from since the manufacture of them is no longer making them? Both devices serve the same basic purpose which is providing elevated water stream capability. ...

    Volly companies in NYC

In many areas they are accepted and appreciated even by most career firefighters!  Look at Rochester New York for instance, they have a volunteer unit (Rochester Protectives) who the city actually provides a truck and driver for.  They have been in service for many years and are greatly...

    Volly companies in NYC

Kind of obvious what side of the fence you come from!  That's not really their reason for existence at all, and I'm very sure even if they were eliminated FDNY would not add companies or Manpower.  The ones that still exist are very community centered and are assets to those communities.  As...

    100' Ferrara Rear Mount Aerials

I see they took the spotlight that used to be centered over the windshield off to make room for the horns!  I wonder what the powers to be will say about that, they normally don't mind additions but don't like supplied items removed.

Pierce Mini Pumper on International Chassis.

Rochester basically paired a midi pumper with a quint as a two piece unit.  The midi's had a two man cab and responded to just about every call for the station.  Both units went for structural calls.  They are presently converting back to a conventional engine/truck configuration.  Like most...

Pierce Mini Pumper on International Chassis.

The system used by Bonita Springs makes a lot of sense as far as saving wear and tear on the larger apparatus goes.  I'm also quite sure the smaller units can respond quicker in most cases.  Depending on how they changed manning and response criteria it may be a good move.  If they took a five...
