Only Company in FDNY History to have Three Sections???

Separate from the concept of 2nd or 3rd sections, some engine companies used to run  with 2 pieces (i.e. pumper and hose wagon) on some or all of their boxes.  Do any of them (besides the engine/satellite responses) still do that  ?

    Radio interference

Is anyone else hearing an almost constant "dead carrier" on the new Brooklyn frequency (482.01875)?  It's low level but noticeable (S-4 or 5) in west Brooklyn.  Too bad I don't have DF capabilities. My scanner was hanging up on that channel & for a while I thought the FAD's were accidently...

    Mixer off - why?

Listening to a whole bunch of 10-41 code 1's in Brooklyn tonite, many given out with the marshals already on the scene. Both the units in the field and disp's always request/specify "mixer off" to relay the address of the fire, it's location in the building and why it's considered a 10-41. It...

    Physician, heal thyself

TOKYO (Reuters) Jan. 29? A blaze broke out at a fire station in Japan this week after a firefighter left a cooking stove burning as crew members left the station to respond to emergency calls.  Most of the duty staffers were out on a call when their colleague, alone at the station and cooking...

    01/04/09 Box#???? Brooklyn Navy Yard: A first?

At about 1320 hours... really sorry I missed the box #. In 40+ years of buffing the job this is the first time I ever heard the preliminary report on a land based incident given by a Marine Company! Marine 6 gave a preliminary report of a fire on the 4th floor of a commercial building that had...

    Duration of incident?

When did FDNY start tracking this statistic, and why?  Is there official pressure to place jobs U/C quickly for PR purposes?

    MORE WAR YEARS TRIVIA

I remember back through at least the late '60's E201 in Sunset Park had a hose wagon that rolled on all of their boxes between 2nd (maybe it was 3rd) Avenue and the waterfront.  That was for the active piers along the waterfront at the time.  They also appeared to be Ward LaF. open cab rigs.

    CD Pumpers?

Does anyone have photo's of the old Civil Defense pumpers?  I think they were Ward LaFrance, perhaps model years around 1954. I remember them being used for training the Auxiliary Firemen and also for engine company spares. Best kept one I ever saw was CD-25, which was quartered over at E-159...

    NYC Vollies

    >>Sounds like it is time to bring back the Auxiliaries of the 60s and 70s.  Now that was a time!<< Count me in!  FDNY is promoting that lame CERT program on its website, so why not? Anyone tight with a city councilman, or three?  Maybe the City could get some Federal bucks by re-instituting...

    Morse identifier BII?

I recently noticed a new morse identifier, in addition to the KYE994 station ID, appearing on the Brooklyn frequency. It's a spaced  " B  I  I "  or    _.../../..    Does anyone know what this is all about?  What BII means?

    Unnecessary radio messages

An open letter to FDNY Comm. Div.: A commonly recurring exchange between units in the field and the CO is as follows: UNIT: "We'll be away from the rig; please give us our runs over the air" DISP: "Have someone monitor the radio". Well, DUHH!  Does anyone suppose that a unit would ask to...

    Governors Island

On a recent (closely) guided tour of the south end of Governors Island the tram passed by, parked outside a 1-story fire station, a relatively late model FDNY-marked pumper with no unit designator on its side.  Didn't notice the make, but it didn't appear to be Mack or Seagrave.  A quick glance...
