FDNY TL-44's old Mack Apparatus sitting in Virginia Fire Department

Yesterday, while driving through Prince William County, Virginia, a DC Suburb, I saw TL-44's old Mack Aerialscope sitting in the back parking lot of the Dale City Vol. Fire Department Station #10 next to their cut-up cars.  It looks like 44's rig from either 1989 or 1998 (See fdnytrucks.com...

FDNY EMS Bunker Gear - Why?

I notice in a lot of FDNY incident photos from various web sites I see a lot of EMS personnel wearing bunker gear.  This strikes me as a bit odd since I didn't think EMTs and Medics--other than the EMS rescue units--went into dangerous/IDLH environments.  I left NYC before the merger and never...

FAST Truck Equipment - What do you normally grab?

Last night my vollie company drilled on Rapid Intervention Team concepts and it made me wonder what equipment and tools the designated FAST truck crews of FDNY ladder companies normally grab as they come off the rig.  I've seen in many videos of the FAST crew standing by with a Stokes basket...

    A Moment in Time 8-10-1968

Interesting stuff but I have a question based on Dennis Smith's book "Report from Engine Co 82"  which i am reading right now  In his book, Smith references Engine Co 85 and Ladder 712 which are apparently quarterd with E82 nd L31 in the same Intervale Ave firehouse used today by 82/31. My...

What's that Ringing Bell heard in Apparatus Cabs/

Yet another question...thanks to those who've reponded to my previous question. On several video clips I 've seen taken of or near the officer/chauffer seats on FDNY apparatus a ringing bell, like that of an old phone, can be heard.  What is that?  Is it some sort of alert indicating there is...

Seagrave Marauder II Metal Roof boxes?

Not sure if this an old question but what are the metal big metal diamondplate boxes that sit on the roof of the newer Seagrave Marauder II engines used for and what's in 'em?  Is it firefighting/rescue gear or something else for apparatus function like HVAC, etc?

FDNY Helmet Fronts - Where to get the same ones?

Looking for some assistance on FDNY helmet fronts.  For the Ben 2 helmet, can anyone advise where someone can purchase a custom made front from the same folks who make the ones for the FDNY?  I'm familiar with the Paul Conway, LeatherFronts.com, and The Fire Store but for some reason I get the...

Use of elevators or stairs in hi-rise/OMD jobs

Just curious, what is FDNY SOP during a 10-76/10-77 on a high floor (e.g. 22nd floor) for the FFs to get upstairs...elevator part of the way or hump the stairs the whole way?  If its the elevator, how many floors below the fire floor do they take the elevator to?
