All of the old mechanical boxes had a telegraph key inside the box to communicate with the C.O. I believe the boxes in the High Pressure districts had a telephone connected to the High Pressure Pumping Stations. Those boxes were marked on the back "HP TEL.".
Chicago has been doing that since the 70's. Build a new house to combine 2 engines and a truck, then later disband one of the engines. They are much better than NY building new firehouses. NY is much better than Chicago with replacing apparatus.
With the ongoing production delays and problems affecting car and truck manufacturers, will the same problems affect fire apparatus builders in the future?
There was also a ferry from 77 St. to Welfare (Blackwells) Island. It did not carry vehicles, only passengers and was eliminated in the mid 50's around the time the bridge to the island opened. That might account for the 10th. Battalion being assigned.
Wait until the next mayor is elected (whoever that is). None of the candidates are really addressing the financial hole the city is in. The next mayor may be closing a lot more than 6 companies.
Engine 58 & Ladder 26 were always the busiest companies from the 20's into the 60's. They were considered a "punishment house" although not everyone who went there went for that reason, many wanted a busy house.
I remember some chiefs and company officers asking on the radio "what are we getting on this box"? It was a tip off that they had something. If they weren't getting 3 & 2 they would follow up with "fill out the assignment or fill out the box".
