This job being quickly K/D aside, 317/165/54 continue to be some of the busiest companies in the city again. 3 AH for them in 36 hours or so. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…surprised at how busy this area of QNS is despite the fact that it’s very private dwelling heavy. Not sure of their response area completely, but I’d say little to no NYCHA complexes and a majority of 317/165 work is detached PD. Yet they see fires almost every few days. Many other companies around the city have mostly detached PD in their area yet are nowhere close to the fire duty they see.

Huge 1* & 2* Due Response Area. Not Too Many MD's, but a Ton of PD's & it looks like
they're on their own for a bit before anyone else Get's-In in a lot of Their 1* Due Area.

For years and years you could literally draw a circle in Southeast Queens and 90% of the work was within that circle. 303/126, 298/127, 301/150, 317/165 and 302/155 formed that circle. Right smack in the middle of that circle was 275, later with 133. No matter which way they went there was fire duty. Last 15 years or so the circle has greatly expanded with work now reaching historically less busy (but still very good) houses. 311/158, 285/142, 304/162 in particular now do a good amount of fire duty. As said above, 317/165 still get a good piece of it… not only in that original circle but also as they run both further south and north. Excellent companies out there..was honored to work alongside them.

I believe an abundance of older wood frame structures contributes to this issue as well

Yes these houses are getting old, but houses by themselves don’t go on fire. In my opinion it’s the carelessness and lack of safety of the people. Certain neighborhoods of this city always have more fires than others. Northern Queens has older PD’s and these companies are not busy like SE section. But I agree with you that older structures are probably less safe. What ever it is, being drugs or the lack of safety, it was job security for me. After 35 years I’ve been to more fires than I should have. Stay safe out there.

Interesting tidbit of 317/165: a 3rd alarm gets transmitted on arrival in the rockaways 317/165 dont go. Especially in the areas the 54 is the All Hands Chief. I forget if it was before Firecad or Barb but they didnt go at all. Now they are further down on the card like a 4th or 5th. Companies in qtrs with other battalions go before them (ex: 107, 308 and possibly 298 127) and some companies will drive past them to get down there. I was told by some old timers this was because they were considered a relocator for the rockaways or to keep a company in the area. Not sure which it was.
