Came across in a book that Ladder 49 had a 110' RM but I cannot find a mention of it in the little red books. Delivered between editions? Thanx.

Grumpy,

The four 110ft rearmounts were:
L-4 1989; L-165 1989; L-49 1990 and L-38 1990. They stayed in service at their assigned companies and the 110ft aerials were not replaced when time came for replacement.

On a side note, I was told that the fourth 110ft rig was supposed to go to L-176 but there was a problem with the rig and their quarters, so it was assigned to 38 instead.

Don't know how the troops liked them (or not). Maybe there is someone on site who had some experience with them.

They were hard to maneuver especially tight streets, took a lot longer to set up compared to regular rear mounts, the 110' had different outriggers due to the bigger heavier ladder, the diamond plate in the crew compartment was always very hot, each rig had its own malfunctions like air line leaks or hydraulic leaks, etc. It should tell you that only 4 were delivered.

Only appears on page 26 and 27 of the 1995 issue of that red book

If you like your TV Trivia also appears on opening credits of early NYPD Blue episodes !
Was replaced in 2001 so before the next red book in 2002

Did not know there was a 1995 issue, my first book is from 1990, then 2005. But I did find them in the FAJ Seagrave RM book.

Why were the apparatus assigned to those specific companies? L4 seems understandable because of Midtown. But what about the rest?

Hello Grumpy> I remember those 4 110 foot Seagraves that were built for the FDNY. I did have the little red book that had them however as you know they were One time purchases and the FDNY never purchased more of them so they were one time things. I also would have hoped that more of them would have been purchased but apparently the brass didn't like them enough.
I like you an a Chicago Fan even though I am very much into what FDNY is doing as well as other fire departments.
Do you remember that the Chicago Fire Departments first E/One Aerial Ladder were also 110 feet?.The CFD had 6 1982 models and 3 1983 models on Hendrickson Chassis. The CFD also had purchased 3 1988 models. Aside from 2 135 foot models and a 137 foot model that is being used at Aerial Tower 8 all of the E/One Trucks that Chicago has purchased since then are 100 footers. So Chicago had about a dozen 110 foot Aerials but they also weren't replaced after they were purchased.
That is Ironic. You probably know that the CFD did purchase a 105 foot Aerial Ladder with a Prepiped Waterway. It was a Pierce 2006 model for Aerial Tower 1. Now it is used as a Spare rig and as of late it has been used as a Spare for Tower Ladder 10 which is not too good if you consider that this spare rig in Not a Tower Ladder.
