12/2/14 Staten Island 10-75 Box 3017

With All Those Dead-End Streets West of Brook Ave. & the Divider on Hylan - Do 165/85 have to go Over to Chesterson,

& then swing All The Way Back to Brook ... ?? ?  ???  :o

162/82 has direct route up Hylan Blvd.  They would get in much quicker even though distances are about the same.

165/85 has to use Amboy Rd and Tysens Lane - much slower.  Also cannot cross Hylan because of barrier as StAjo pointed out.  Maybe they respond up S Railroad Ave to avoid the Hylan Blvd highway divider, but that is a slow route too.  Oakwood Beach area is another SI neighborhood that is not close to any SI firehouse.

STAjo, Mack is right. The route 162/82/23 would take on Hylan Blvd is a direct shot. 165/85 has a lot more tight and congested streets to cover, with the SI traffic as bad as it is they can be pretty delayed from that alone (although this job was at 4AM). There is also the infamous barrier on Hylan that you noticed, gotta go around that. Mack is right they would probably take Amboy Road and a street to come down to cross Hylan, the Chesterton route you were talking about STAjo.

The reality is that this area, like Mack said, is far from most houses. Its just one of those areas. If you look at the Unit Location Map on this site, you will see the distance for even 3rd and 4th due companies such as 159, 167 and 87. Quite the trips for them.

I remember E162/L082 responding to a pull box in the Oakwood area, not too far from this box, came over in quarters as first due but there was some question on who would actually arrive first, E165/T085 being a close 2nd due. 162/82 arrives at the box simultaneously as 165/85. 162 handled the pull box and quickly went 10-8, 165/85 went 10-8 first, they didn't stick around for too long.

This area does also have a lot of dead ends like you pointed out, all residential. Great Kills Park is right behind these blocks so every so often when they catch a multiple alarm brush job in the park these blocks fill up with all units for blocks and blocks. A seasonal thing for these residents in the area.

In believable the distance that the SI companies have to travel to a 1st box !!! The distance is even greater for second and 3rd companies !!! I live in great kills and have seen 1st hand how long 1st due companies operate alone before second and 3rd due companies  arrive !!!
