AFAIK the “5” man engine companies only refers to firefighters and not the officer. So the companies are going from 6 on the rig to 5 on the rig. Not 5 to 4. Just for clarity
Officers in the FDNY are not counted as a firefighter. They are the officer and are supervisors. While many an officer might help with a difficult stretch, that’s not their job. For manning, it’s now 4

I have to ask one question about this reduction. What is the source of this information?

As far as I can remember, this is all part of the UFA contract with the city.

What's the history behind these 20 Engine Companies retaining the 5th firefighter? Geographically, they are scattered across all five boroughs in diverse neighborhoods with different fire challenges. Their work-loads, runs and workers, is also diverse. Some are single unit houses, while others are paired with Truck Companies. For example, E54 with L4 and B9 has 5 members assigned, while E8 with L2 and B8 has 4 members. Both midtown stations, almost parallel to each other in Manhattan, one on the west side and east side, respectively. Same thing with E65 with 5 firefighters in a single unit house south of midtown, while E23 has 4 members in a single unit house to the north of midtown.
What makes these 20 Engines different from the other 175 Engines, that they retained their "door" firefighters while all the others had the fifth firefighter cut??

I understand that. My post was for clarity as almost everywhere else counts the officer so I was just commenting for some who might not be familiar that FDNY does not count the officer. An FDNY 4-person engine is a 5-person engine everywhere else.

The Fire Dept. is like an insurance policy, it's nice to know it's there but hopefully you never have to use it. And only when you need them is when you care about it. Another thing we forget with the amount of emt runs Engines are doing, it continues to stress the response of other companies to a scene of a fire especially if first due is not available.

Question for the class.

How many of those companies posted above are actually 5 man Engines?

If E-54 has 5 but E-34 has 3 and the 5th man gets detailed out.

Are they no longer considered a 5 man engine? Most likely 10-15? because they normally have 5?

How often does something like that happen?

34 would hire the 4th, thats the minimum staffing to start a tour. After the tour starts is a different story, but no, they cant be detailed out and ride short to begin a tour.

This is nothing new.....The City is choosing to implement a clause in the UFA contract when medical leave reaches XYX % they can reduce the staffing on the Group A or whatever they refer to them now as engines......All smoke and mirrors......just more of a headline now due to budget crisis and social media being used to further agendas.......

Not sure of all of the units but 308 has the JFK Hosewagon, and 324 has Sat 4. So that may explain why they were 5 man but could be wrong.

what an absolute shame, but you gotta pay for all those hotel rooms for your New York guests

This is just the start of the budget cuts unfortunately. There will probably more of a decrease in the manning since it is the least visable to the public unlike closing firehouses and eliminating companies.
