Wrong cornice. The one on the outside, roof level, exterior of building. Usually fire in top floor apartment out windows extends to cornice or from cockloft fire.

A cornice is an ornamental type feature at the top of old law tenements. In civilian terms its the roof overhang in the front of the building. Usually by cutting a square into the cornice with the saw, can put a line directly into it, just as long as there is no other location with fire like the cockloft
