Bronx Box 3396, Webster Ave at East 197th St. The physical red alarm box stood right on the NW corner of 197th, right outside the entrance to O’Briens Tavern. Jack O’Brien, the owner, was from the “old country” and the nicest man you could meet, exceeded only by his wife Mary, also “off the boat”. That’s how we said it back then. The O’Briens were my upstairs neighbor and it seems there was an O’Briens tavern on every street corner in the Bronx in those days.

From their former qtrs at 2504 Webster Ave you could literally see up Webster Ave to this Box. Less than half a mile, straight line of sight. It was E48s last 1st due northern box, and the unofficial border between what was considered Fordham or Bedford Park. Beyond 3396, E79 took over, with L37 1st due all along Webster short of Fordham Rd.

With their move south on Webster a few decades ago, the mileage changed, and it shows E79 to now be closer. But the same box came in a year ago and E48 assigned 1st due then as well. Maybe because 79 has to negotiate a couple of turns, but it’s still a straight run up Webster for 48. Who knows how the computer really determines this?

Just a bit of neighborhood history...and the people who lived it.
