Back in the day if you worked on vehicles the "Iron Triangle" was like a goldmine...if you could not find a needed part there it did not exist...the area was always run down but it was off the beaten path & many hard workers put food on their table working there....the "fat cats" had their eyes on the land for many years ....in more recent times they saw dollars in a "proposed" casino as well as some subsidized housing & bulldozed many of the long established business's telling them they could be relocated.....i don't think more than a token relocation took place & there probably never will be such a group in one spot as this area was....during the late '70s into the early '80s this was also where NYC's Surplus Vehicles were auctioned off on a weekly basis (in a lot next to the big cement stack on 126 St off Roosevelt Ave.) including many FDNY Rigs & some really low mileage wrecked NYPD RMPs (before moving to the BKLYN Navy Yard mid '80s) ...the FDNY Rigs did not appear as often as the wrecked RMPs which always had a few up for auction regularly.
Wonder what stopped the workers from calling 911? Either Rescue 4 was in the right place at the absolute right time, or this was a delayed alarm from that auto shop and the other shops in that area…
