Nice Job by 102 Chauffer in the picture above hitting the Tenth fl........This is something I had written awhile back in regards....
MAXIMUM AERIAL LADDER EXTENSION.....I always considered as a general rule that provided you were in proximity to the base of the bldg with the turntable in line with the target window that you could hit the 11th floor in a Project....there are many variables .... just a few are whether you are on the street side (rather than staying in the roadway farther from the bldg consider entering the sidewalk at a corner ) or on the side or rear & the presence of a fence or other barrier.....chain link can be overcome in an emergency but other obstacles can be more formidable....i used to do a Drill to demonstrate the height that could be reached...back a RM to about 10 to 15 ft from the bldg & raise the aerial (even if you could back closer to the base of the bldg it may be counterproductive as it makes the climbing angle almost straight up)......staying 10 to 15 ft away will still make a considerably steep climbing angle however at the extreme angle it is best to hold the rungs not the beams & lean in as much as possible....avoid grabbing any greasy cables or any other obvious grease covered areas....if you are planning to ascend to vent then tools on the Aerial Tip should suffice... do not carry a tool in your hand...if you do for some reason need to carry a Halligan you could slip it down the back of your coat at the neck (adz/spike) facing away....if doing anything at the Tip use your harness hook to clip on a rung.....another "True Emergency" maneuver could be if a Member was trapped at a window & had no time to wait for assistance he could come out & hook onto the Tip & be moved away from danger whether he was on the right or wrong side of the Aerial would not matter if the alternative was taking a dive....the Member could also be moved to another location or lower window while hooked on the back of the Aerial...no one else should be on the Aerial while it is being retracted.....i would not advocate carrying out most of these actions at Drill but knowing & discussing the possibilities may save a life ....Drill should basically be limited to fully extending the Aerial to demonstrate the height capability & allowing Members to climb up 15 or 20 ft just to get the feeling of the angle.
