"At 9:42 Tuesday morning, the FDNY was called to 135-40 229th Street in Queens for a construction accident that trapped two workers.
'The first due units on the scene realized people were trapped with sand and concrete. It was a trench. We put out on the matrix for special units. The first due units on scene secured the concrete and then started digging by hand to remove the victims.' said Battalion Chief Scott Cowan. 'The complexities of a trench collapse are the sand, the dirt, whatever type of soil we have, puts a suction around the victims that’s caught in the trap. We also had concrete slabs in there that were pinning the victims up against the foundation. So, the members had to remove the concrete slab and push it away so they can get to the victim and start digging by hand.'
'Engine 314 and Ladder 158 shored up loose concrete with the spreaders and step chucks, and basically continued to dig the patients out until the matrix showed up. Both patients were removed successfully,' said Lieutenant Jason Rina of Engine 314.
Both patients were transported to Jamaica Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries."
