I don't mean to "rock the boat" here guys, BUT, I have reason to believe that the guy in the photo of Reply # 16 - "IS A FDNY FIRE MARSHALL".

However, as I understand it, he is NOT wearing an "approved" department jacket.

I was a buff too. But whether buffs should drive over hoses, pull up nose to nose with a rig at a job, have flashing lights in their vehicles - ABSOLUTELY NOT.

I'm not sure what to make of the observations about the activities of buffs at this fire. But, I think I'm envious. In 1969, I was buffing a fifth alarm on Morrowfield Avenue off Murray Avenue in the Squirrel Hill section of Pittsburgh about three in the morning. I was watching the Bureau of Fire trying to stop a top floor burning in a huge apartment building. Not a soul around...across the street.....watching the overhead power lines. Suddenly, a cop is beating me with his baton..."Get the ____ outta here...NOW"
1996...Chicago...0100 hrs...buffing a 2-11 in a Greek restaurant on West Division Avenue with a bunch of gray-haired buffs. We are in an alley two blocks from the job shooting the breeze with the engineer on Engine 78 who's on a plug. Same thing.. a Chicago PD sergeant charges around the corner screaming "Anyone here in five minutes is going to jail!"....Yes ma'am!
What's the secret? I'd like to avoid this in the future.

It’s quite simple Old Timer... it’s the year 2021. Not 1969. Not 1996. Everyone has Cell Phones. Everyone has Cameras. Everyone has CitizenApp. Everyone has Social Media. And everyone hates Cops now.
The point I’m trying to make.... is that it’s a different time than your experiences. These Buffs today can record on their phones and on citizen app. They can wear FDNY work duty uniforms and walk all over fire scenes because cops today (due to our climate) are not going to walk up to these buffs and confront them/grab their phones/curse/ or simply have confrontation with them due to instant documention. Totally different environment today as past decades. Not blaming the cops. I don’t. But I do think the FDNY should look into this having civilians purposefully running into fire scenes and up to command posts. This is a safety issue. What if a cornice falls on one of these buffs taking away resources at fires because buffs videotaping are roaming around the firegeound.
