I wonder if the free-standing diner is still on the N/W corner of Union Tpk. and Lakeville Road. I haven't been out that way in many moons.

Right Next To 870..

.2 Miles From Company 5 On 78th Avenue

For sure. The # 164 (both engine in SI and ladder in QNS) is synonymous with some of the longest runs for first-due companies in the city I’d say.
If you think about it this way, most of the area is more suburban with less traffic, so I'm sure in most cases they fly once there on the road. Probably takes just as long as some companies in Manhattan, who are much closer but have to deal with the hectic city traffic.

I think the diner is closed now - I believe it was called the Silver Moon at one time - it had changed hands many years ago and I remember the food kind of going down hill - that was nearly 10 years ago and I didn’t go back - Blue Bay Diner on Francis Lewis and the LIE is still very good - opened in 1965 while I was going to Bishop Reilly HS which was taken over St Francis Prep in the mid 70’s

I would think that we will hear from Capt784 on the subject of Manhattan traffic. He might have spent more time to reach the corner
of 26 Engine than the time it takes to some of the longer runs in the outer boros.

I recall my dad mentioning that on some of 26's first due class 3's, the rig would get as far as the ramp in front of quarters and the members would run down the street with the "rolled ups." The MPO got the rig to the location as soon as he could. True or false, maybe or maybe not?

It Is In Nassau County. Langdale Street is the Border Street. So basically the next building next to MLFD Co. 5 Is In Queens.
In Westchester, North White Plains FD sits on a corner and the other corner is the City of White Plains. (WPFD). Some quirky stuff out there.
