Saw on FB that Philly, Camden and Wilmington were requested and turned down/out of service. FB Bravest was southbound off Beach Haven/LBI, NJ at 1600hrs.

Coast Guard and local fire agencies respond to barge fire in Delaware Bay​

BOWERS, Del. — The Coast Guard and local fire agencies are responding to a barge fire approximately 9 miles south of Port Mahon, Monday morning.

Watchstanders at the Sector Delaware Bay Command Center received a call at approximately 1 a.m. reporting a barge on fire in the Delaware River. The barge was reportedly carrying household appliances for scrap.

The Coast Guard launched a 29-foot Response Boat-Small boatcrew to assist and continue to monitor the situation. There are six fire boats on scene from local fire agencies actively fighting the fire.

“Our highest priority is ensuring the safety of firefighters and response personnel on scene,” said Capt. Jonathan Theel, Sector Delaware Bay Captain of the Port. “We will also work to mitigate any environmental threats and protect the flow of commerce within this vital port.”

There are no injuries and no evidence of pollution impacting the waterway. The cause of the fire is not known at this time.

The Coast Guard requests that all mariners avoid the area of the incident.

I recall hearing that the FDNY boats were purchased with Federal funding that stipulated that it be available for mutual aid from something like Maine to DC.

I'm unsure if anyone else has a big enough fireboat to reliably do the trip.

Do to funding received from the Federal Dept of Home Land Security 12 NJ departments from Perth Amboy to Edgewater, have from small (24' to 36') vessels. A few departments have medium (40' to 70') size fire boats . These units are manned by local fire companies and do not have seperate dedicated personnel like FDNY. These marine units are all part of what is known as the North New Jersey Fire Boat Task Force. When a call is received, 3 boats are dispatched by a central dispatch center. Daily, any number of them can be out of service. To help maintain avialabilty the Palasides Interstate Police agency gave up one of their vessels to help the NNJFBTF. This vessel was turned into a fire boat & is being used as a spare. Once any department receives federal funds, the equipment is listed as a regional asset.

Is the "Marine Tactical Unit" the Marine Incident Response Team (land unit with a truck similar to one of the TSUs), or is it something different (like maybe a boat)?

The Bravest is apparently refueling in Cape May Harbor before getting ready for the battle.

From the Brooklyn Navy Yard to Camden DE by land is about 175 miles. But by water it's more like 200-225 miles (or, lets say, 175 nautical miles). At 26 knots, that's a trip of almost 7 hours. But if M-6 is at Cape May, they're only about 40 miles away.

Does anyone know if the Marine Battalion is riding with M-6, or did they take their own boat? Seems theirs might be a bit small for that kind of trip.

It’s that it’s called Marine Tactical now they will have a boat on top like like TSU soon

There are times that the Mar Batt will ride with Mar 6 because of safety reasons. Only see one boat traveling.

Stupid question (not my 1st): Would the Marine Tactical Unit go 175 miles with lights & siren? What about tolls?

I'm assuming the Marine battalion either road on Marine 6 or drove, I'm sure he certainly didn't go that far in 1 of the small boats.
