It probably is accurate. It was 30 minutes from when Battalion 18 gave the All-Hands until the fire was Under Control. When the All Hands is given with a request for an extra engine and truck, dispatchers need to start back-filling. At the time, the dispatchers had no idea if the fire would last 15 minutes, 36 minutes, or even an hour or more. It could have escalated to a higher alarm. So the dispatchers have to react to what is happening in real time with what is in front of them.

The fire doesnt end at under control. Companies are still there packing hose, picking up tools, assisting the marshals, etc. once back at quarters they arent always immediately back in service either. Injuries, tool replacements, getting cleaned up, all take time.

bxengine: A question for you. Many firehouses in New York don’t have a lot of room outside of quarters. I think of Engine 65! Where I worked, covering units would stay at the firehouse while the crew cleaned up and got back in service. Does this happen with the FDNY? If so, where do they move the apparatus without parking in the street?

There were times when we were coming back from a job in the wee hours, and we knew there was a company relocated, we would pull a box a few blocks away to get them out of our beds. Then our rig could back in and clean up while they stayed outside especially in the cold weather. I’m not saying what company this was but I’m sure there were others out there that did the same, am I right guys?
