NY State Dept. of Health Approves Closure Plan:

' It still faces a lawsuit challenging the closing, and a judge has ordered the facility not to reduce its medical services in the meantime'

Once it closes, many patients will most likely land at Bellevue or NYU Langone Health, two hospitals both several blocks up First Avenue from Beth Israel.

'The Health Department said Beth Israel must fund an expansion of the emergency room at Bellevue, the flagship of the city’s public hospital system'

The hospital isn't completely closing, but the ER is. Also compared to much of city, lower Manhattan is very saturated with hospitals which I'm sure cut into their profits. Plus Mt. Sinai now owns four hospitals in the Manhattan and likely wants to consolidate resources.

The NY Times article said the whole hospital is shutting down eventually. I'm not familiar with the whole situation whereas I am not from the city, could someone elaborate?

Shutting down the ER is even worse...

Exactly. As Lebby posted, there are plenty of hospitals in the area that provide general medical services.
There is though, a shortage of ER Services below 14th Street.

Also, from what I read in this and other articles, Mt. Sinai does plan to eventually
close Beth Israel Hospital.

With St. Vinny's and Cabrini both gone I can't believe they would even consider closing Beth Israel. I understand it comes down to money, but at some point the closure of hospitals has to come down to a public health emergency.
