The box number is associated with an intersection. Back in the day the units used to respond to whatever box per the bells. No phone alarms really. Simone would see a fire, run to the pull box and pull the lever.

It would then be sent to central dispatch, then dispatch would send the bells to the fire house.

The member on house watch would count the bells, then the engine or truck would respond to the intersection associated with that box.

Here's what they look like (in the photos). Almost every corner in the city has (or had) one, and each was numbered as shown in the 2nd photo (844). That number identified the location of the box. In later years, most if not all were replaced by a voice system which allowed the caller to connect directly to a dispatcher to explain what the problem was (see the 3d photo). The advent of the 911 system (your 000) and especially cell phones made the call boxes obsolescent, and indeed many of them while still standing, are inoperative. But the box number system is alive and well and used for every FDNY call. I should mention that there are also special purpose box numbers for specific situations, but someone with more knowledge than me should explain that to you. An example would be Bronx box 3826, which is struck when mutual aid to the city of Mount Vernon (north of NYC) is approved. Units assigned to that box respond to staging at Provost Ave & East 233rd St. Other examples can be found in the FAQ for this site by searching for "box" https://www.nycfire.net/forums/threads/frequently-asked-question.74764/

And just in case you have nothing better to do, you can find a list of in-service boxes at https://data.cityofnewyork.us/widgets/v57i-gtxb.
First letter of box number indicates borough (B: Brooklyn, M: Manhattan, X: Bronx, Q: Queens, R: Staten Island)
