Yes my old block on University Avenue between Kingsbridge and 195 actually looks nicer now than it did 50 years ago. More trees etc. Thanks for the positive feedback. Happy holidaysThanks, Cap for the photos.
Interesting to see the block came out of the War Years fairly good. Probably a lot of rehabs and renovations from then until now, certainly more upscale cars and trees.
When I went back to my old neighborhood in Brooklyn for the 280/132 Centennial (2013), there were more trees on my old block than I remembered. Must be a sign of prosperity.
And to you as well. Take care and stay safe.Yes my old block on University Avenue between Kingsbridge and 195 actually looks nicer now than it did 50 years ago. More trees etc. Thanks for the positive feedback. Happy holidays
Used to play Sunday morning softball 3 blocks away (Jerome & 195 St) - bar league in the 70s, lotta Irish bars around back then.Yes my old block on University Avenue between Kingsbridge and 195 actually looks nicer now than it did 50 years ago. Before moving to VA, I lived at 2532 University Ave. Looking forward to the Kingsbridge Armoury redevelopment. It's long overdueUsed to play Sunday morning softball 3 blocks away (Jerome & 195 St) - bar league in the 70s, lotta Irish bars around back then.
Just north of 190. I used to walk past your building every school day for several years. I went to St Nicholas of Tolentine HS. It’s such a shame that the Armory just sits there. My uncle worked there as a Major in the National Guard ( he was full time). I remember as a young boy visiting him (the armory was just around the corner).. we would climb all over the cannons and army trucks. Great times and great time to be growing up in the Bronx. Before moving to VA, I lived at 2532 University Ave. Looking forward to the Kingsbridge Armoury redevelopment. It's long overdue
I used to play Little league Ball on the same fields next to PS86 high school and across from the Armory. Yes there were so many Irish bars up and down Jerome and across Kingsbridge road and Fordham Rd. It seemed there was one on every Block, sometimes 2. Inwood was the same way. Never a shortage of watering holes. lol. Great times.Used to play Sunday morning softball 3 blocks away (Jerome & 195 St) - bar league in the 70s, lotta Irish bars around back then.
So many of the all hands fires back then would be second alarms (or greater) today. And the only addition on the all hands was the rescue and another Chief. No FAST, no Squad Except for certain boxes in the South Bronx) no RAC, Many times there very little companies available due to workload. When this picture was taken several Bronx companies including E41 pictured here had second sections (E41-2).I love this first picture. I always try to imagine what it must have been like working then. How many changes have come about since then? When was ladders 3 adopted? Before ladders 3 were there no riding assignments? This pic was probably during adaptive response, when a truck had 6 firemen. Did a 10-30 get an extra truck assigned?
