Just heard today at FDNY Orange County Retired Firefighters meeting that Deputy Chief James "Jimmy" Murtagh, who at one time was the Chief of Training for the FDNY. died about a week ago, in the state of Florida. Jimmy was a firefighter in L-17-2 and rose rapidly in the ranks of FDNY in just a few years to FDNY Assistant Chief/Chief of Training. A college professor and head of the Fire Science Department of the Rockland Community College. Jimmy was a mentor to myself and alot of other Fire Science Students and truly a friend to many of us. Truly One of the great minds in the FDNY. "Rest in Peace Brother."

Chief Murtagh was also head of the committee that succesfully introduced and implemented MDT and firehouse terminals FDT into the FDNY in 1991, it was a pleasure working with him.

Like a few here I was very lucky to meet Lt Gary Howard in Bayside a number of times thanks to Chief Jack K. "68jk09" and Willy D "nfd2004" at our Wednesday evening get together dinners.

A lovely man who had time for everyone. We also met him on the trip to the fire museum on Spring Street. (Altho if I'm honest when he saw us coming in sure he wanted to run away lol)

But he was very generous with his time that day and explaining everything on show. You could tell by listening to him his love for the job was still there.

My thoughts are with his family and many friends at this sad time.

I share the same feelings. I had the pleasure of meeting Gary on a few different occasions. May he Rest in peace.
 
Had the good futune to work with Gary in Engine 75. He was a great guy and helluva fireman. We all call each other brothers but Gary was truiy a brother to you. May he finally rest in peace in the palms of the lord. My condolenes to to you and Gary's family.
