Bill and I were brought up down the block from each other, in Flatbush Brooklyn. In my career in the FDNY we met from time to time and always greeted each other with a handshake and a smile, in later year despite the difference in our ranks. Bill was always good and fair to me in all ways.

Chief Jack McElroy was one of the finest men I ever have known. An outstanding veteran of some of the busiest unit in the FDNY during some of the busiest years in the FDNY war years. I first met Jack when I was a covering in the mid 1980s as a Lieutenant assigned to Batt. 26 in the South Bronx. I often worked covering in the very busy units in Batt. 17 where Jack was a Battalion Chief. He asked me where I worked as a Firemen and when I told him in Ladder 11 and Ladder 18 on the Lower East Side we had a bond thereafter. Ask anyone who worked with Jack and no one would say anything but that he was a great fair man and a great firefighting Chief. Rest in God's hands, brother and friend.
