RET FDNY FF MARK SUOZZO...... Mike Suozzo formerly of E-60 and E-81 passed away on Saturday and will be waked at Cargain Funeral Home Route 6, Mahopac, NY on Thursday 9/12 from 4-8 PM.
Mike was appointed to E-60 in 1959 and retired from E-81 in the late seventies. May he RIP
 
RET FDNY BC ROBERT BORTHWICK JR.........  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Robert Borthwick, Jr., a forty-four year resident of the area, passed away Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital, Newburgh, NY. Robert was 71 years old. Son of the late Robert and Susan Landau Borthwick, Sr., he was born January 27, 1942 in Brooklyn, NY. Robert was a retired Battalion Chief with the F.D.N.Y., Bronx, NY. He was a member of St. Patrick's Church, Highland Mills, a former member and past Treasurer of Trout Brook Engine Company, Chester, NY and a Veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his wife, Lorraine F. Dougherty Borthwick of Highland Mills, NY; his sons, Robert D. Borthwick and his wife, Heather of Las Vegas, NV, Kenneth P. Borthwick and his wife, Connie of Chester, NY; his daughter, Carol Bassett and her husband, Donald of Highland Mills, NY; his brother, Donald Borthwick and his wife, Donna of Highland Mills, NY; his sister, Patricia Boyle of Brooklyn, NY; six grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, September 12, at Smith, Seaman & Quackenbush, Inc. Funeral Home, 515 Route 32, Highland Mills, NY. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 13, at St. Patrick's Church, 448 Route 32, Highland Mills, NY. Cremation will take place at Cedar Hill Crematory, Middle Hope, NY.

RET FDNY FF HARRY P. MOORE.....  STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Longtime Staten Islander Harry P. Moore, 81, of Bay Terrace, a retired firefighter, died Friday at home.

Born in Queens, he moved to Bay Terrace in 1961.

He served in the U.S. Navy as an electrician's mate aboard the USS Vulcan from 1951 to 1955.

He then worked as a police officer before beginning his 27-year career with the New York City Fire Department, where he served as a firefighter aboard Marine 9. He retired in 1983.

He was a longtime parishioner of St. Charles R.C. Church, where he was one of the founding parishioners and worked part-time as a custodian.

In his leisure time, he enjoyed woodworking, painting and crafts. He also enjoyed gardening, and some of his rose bushes were more than 50 years old.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, the former Mary Virginia Andrews; four sons, Steven, Brian, Richard and Michael; a daughter, Eileen Moore; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Tuesday from the Colonial Funeral Home, New Dorp, with a mass at 9:15 a.m. in St. Charles Church. Burial will be in Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale.

I know very few of these FDNY Firefighters, if any. But I know what they did. I consider them the Greatest Generation of Firefighters to ever live.
 
RET FDNY CPT JOHN GILSTRAP.......It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of, John Gilstrap, the retired Captain of Engine Company 92. John Gilstrap was a Lieutenant in Ladder Company 14 and a Firefighter in Ladder Company 48. He provided exemplary service those who he worked with and for the people of every neighborhood where he worked.

Worked with the "Strap" when I was a young Fireman in L-48 in the late 70's & Early 80.  He was a larger then life figure.  I am deeply saddened.  94/48 is having their Centennial on Nov 1st and I look forward to see the older members who taught me about the Job.

Robert McMahon of Lake Carmel, NY passed away on Saturday October 12, 2013 at the age of 67.

Bob was Born on April 8, 1946 to Martin and Theresa McMahon. Bob is survived by his father Martin McMahon who resides in Florida. He is also survived by his brothers John (Joan) Thomas (Kathleen) and his sister Grace Reeber (Dan). Bob was predeceased by his loving brother Patrick (Susan).

Bob was Married to Donna (McArdle) on December 7, 1968. He was Blessed with 3 Children, Robert, Brian (Kelly) and Brendan (Ana), and 4 grandchildren Kaitlyn, Timothy, Meaghan, and Brendan, all three of whom followed him onto the F.D.N.Y.. Bob Worked for the F.D.N.Y. for 28 years, retiring as a Lieutenant. He was then appointed the Commissioner of Putnam County Bureau of Emergency Services. Where he worked until his retirement in 2012.

Services for Bob will be held at the Donald B. Smith building at 110 old Route 6 Carmel, NY on Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. James the Apostle Church on Wednesday 10 AM. In Lieu of Flowers, donations to Memorial Sloan Kettering in his Memory would be appreciated

 
RET FDNY FF JEREMIAH HEALY.....  Jeremiah Joseph "Jerry" Healy, 75, Of Garden City, South Carolina passed away on Oct. 18.He as an FDNY Firefighter with 23 years of service. He was the Vice-President FDNY Carolina Retirees Association and President Emeritus of the Pocono Chapter of the FDNY Retirees Association. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army. The family will receive friends from 1-3 P.M. and 5-8 P.M. on Monday October 21 at Burroughs Funeral Home, 3558-A Old Kings Highway, Murrells Inlet, S.C. A celebration of Jerry's life will be held at 10 A.M., Oct. 22 in the chapel of the funeral home.

The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the New York Firefighters Burn Center Foundation.

This obit appeared in the 10/20/13 edition of the Pocono Record newspaper.

Ret. FDNY  Lieutenant Matthew F. Hennessy..... a Veteran of WW II serving in the U.S.M.C. For many years Matt was in charge of Transfers and Assignments in the Bureau of Personnel.... He reached the age of 90 this past June.

RET FDNY FF JOHN J. CULLEN...... 

It is with regret to inform the passing of Firefighter John J. Cullen Ladder 85 (Formerly E 257, Squad Co. #4, L-174, AMB-2). On October 23, 2013 at 1800 hours, Jack passed peacefully at home surrounded by family. 
He was appointed July 25, 1959 through April 1st, 1993. 
He was also a Korean War Veteran serving in the United States Navy. 
Jack worked during the War years in Squad Company 4 on Bristol Street responding to 10,000 alarms.  Jack was a chauffeur, senior man, natural leader, and simply loved the job.
