May our brother Rest in Peace, we owe it to him to ensure that his family and friends know we all deeply share in this tragic loss. We must learn from this tragic loss. Does anyone know if the Vacant Building was marked with an "X" to indicate Outside Fire Operation Indicated? Also, who evaluates the structural stability of fire building in Binghamton F.D.?
Captain Bob Rainey FDNY Engine 26 retired.
There was no 'X' on the building. It was Vacant for over a year, Binghamton is a small city, the Downtown Area (Main St. Court St.),
all of about 6 Blocks. My Point is, most folks here in the city (especially BPD, BFD, EMS) are familiar with what's Open for Business & what's Closed/Vacant.
I work for the landlord of that property, and I can tell you it was checked regularly for Security - Doors, Windows, Points of Entry...
Occasionally, an enterprising Vagrant or so would find/force Entry, and subject to immediate ejection.
The Landlord, John B., knew FF Gaudete, John's kids went to school with him. Binghamton is stunned and saddened by his tragic loss.
As far as Structural Stability Evaluation, BFD operates w/ a City-wide Tour Commander (1- AM, 1-PM), equivalent to a BC in FDNY, who Responds on all Reports of, or Working Fires.
He is IC pending the arrival of any Higher-Ranking Chief Officers at a Multi-Alarm Fire.
