I analyzed both the 2nd and the 3rd alarms today to try to understand the deployment of the available SI Units.

There are 18 engines, 11 ladders, 3 batallions, 1 division, and 1 rescue on the island

Second Alarm , northwest quadrant, vicinity of Goethals Bridge.

10:25 - 11:57 AM

9 of the 18 SI engines responded
7 of the 11 SI ladders responded
3 of 3 batallions
division and rescue

and B 42

Third Alarm, Stapleton, northeast quadrant, vicinity of the Verenzano

10:42 to 1:22 PM

6 of the SI Engines responded (two were at the second alarm  166 and 152)
   plus  8 Brooklyn engines
2 of the remaining SI ladders
   plus 7 Brooklyn ladders
plus 7 Brooklyn batallions and B 1 from Manhattan
   plus R2, and S252

The only SI engines not at these alarms were 151, 153, 159, 164, and 168, and ladders 76 and 81.

I also understand that  Engine 4 and 10 were on SI from Manhattan fighting brush fires. E 7 and TL 15 relocated to SI.
Also at least 3 additional Brooklyn engines (221, 239, 254), L 156, and B 48 relocated to SI.

Hope they don't close any companies :( :( :(

Also in S.I. were E55 & TL15 from Manhattan and there were some North Brooklyn companies on the island like E221.

I believe you also had Div. 11 from Brooklyn along with Sat. 3 on the 3rd alarm.

Does anybody have any information about these brush fires?

Thanks for the analysis, kfd274.

Maybe some irony with these two fires -

E154 used to be on Hannah St in Stapleton.  They would have been 1st or second due at the Stapleton 3rd alarm if still there and not 1st due at the Bulls Head fire.

E153 was assigned first due in Stapleton and did not see the job.

There was no SI chief at the 3rd alarm fire.  When was the last time that ever happened?  I don't think in years past they ever assigned all the SI BCs to any multiple.  Usually, I think the 3rd assigned battalion was the 42 or 43 from Bklyn.  I remember the 23 covering while the 21, 22 and 42 operated.

SI used to get the 12 th Division located at E242, not the 11th Division, when there was no 8 Div (1970/1980s).  Now the 12 Division is gone and the nearest covering Deputy responds from downtown Bklyn.

SI has no Squad.  Sq 252 was assigned from Bushwick.  They had maybe a 30 minute response, if lucky.  Sq 18 might be closer, if available.

It looks like R 5 and S1 operated at the West Shore 2nd alarm for more than 20 minutes after the 2nd alarm was transmitted for the Stapleton fire - and still became available before R2 and Sq 252 got to SI.  That's a long time to wait for special units at a multiple alarm fire.

These two back-to-back fires show how stretched units can be in the city, even in SI without Great Kills Park burning.

First Brush Fire was on Ocean Terrace around Todt Hill...E10 and E4 were there with E160, BFU5 and 3 as well as L84...the second was on Corbin St. in Great Kills, E159 with the Satellite was there with E163 (i think), E165, E166, E168, Richmond Engine, Don't even remember the chief...and 85 truck.

Between those, the 2 house fires and the CO leak this mornin I went too, I was running from around 10:30-4:30, from job to job. Even had a chief say "You should just drive me around at this point." That was right after 85's chauf said "all this and Great Kills hasn't even gone up today...yet."

I put 576 images on my digital, used almost 2 rolls on my film cameras...annddd a bottle of Gatorade.

I've only been doing this since around 98...but I gotta say I haven't seen S.I. this busy in a loooong time..if ever. Closing houses will doom not only the city, but probably make Staten Island a burnt wasteland. I mean think of all the guidos with that hair product...that stuff will go up faster then anything in Great Kills.
