One of Chicago's busiest Truck companies, Truck 20 has been placed OOS. They are quartered with Engine 54 on the cities South side, last year they have 2947 fire incidents and 2149 EMS runs for a total of 5096. When their rig developed problems they were given an engine in place of a truck because they have no spare trucks. Now the engine went OOS due to brake issues.

No spare trucks in the city as big as Chicago? Hard to believe. But then the migrants are being well taken care of.

Newark Fire has put their ladder companies in Dodge Durangos before. Obviously very minimal tools, masks and gear in the trunk.

This was probably six years ago, prior to the big fleet upgrade. Back when the 1988 E Ones were still seeing regular duty as front line apparatus.

There are eight new engines and 6 new trucks in the holding yard awaiting dealer pick-up for warranty work.

This is the current breakdown of the CFD engine fleet: 2001/05 32, 06/10 23, 16/20 22, 21/24 15. Spares 1993/95 7 units, 2001/02 16, and 4 from 2006. As for the 7 93/95 units under Illinois regulations they qualify for "Antique Vehicle" plates. Note that from 2011-2015 2 units were purchased. If my math is current 1/3 of the fleet is approaching or over 20 years.

The late Sully Kolomay (legend at Engine 98) told me that when the Mayor needed money he would take it out of CFD budget.

Considering the craziness with the Mayor's pals in the Chicago Teachers Union these days, Chicago makes a child in Biafra look well fed.

This is the situation for the CFD trucks: 2000-05 13 front line, 2006-2015 11 trucks, 2016-present 33. Spares are 10 from 1995-2000 and 2002 16. So supposedly there are 26 spares available but as of Sunday there were none. Some companies have been in a spare for over a year.

u

I'd rather ride in an ancient apparatus than watch layoffs.
Yup my son is a Chicago cop who is now on his way to Africa for a year long deployment with his Reserve unit. Second deployment in 4 years. The city is a mess.
