This is only my idea of what an FDNY SSL should look like....i know nothing about this particular manufacturer just that it looks like it has a lot of compartments...my feelings are that all FDNY SSLs should be Tiller's so that they could negotiate any street in NYC & w/all the compartments they could always carry all the equiptment on the regular Rig that is now on the Second piece negating having to return to qtrs to pick it up on SOC runs..... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fire-Apparatus-Slide-Reno-NV-Truck-11-/161229383545?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item258a052779
 
Nice, I agree.  I saw a set up like this awhile ago from a dept somewhere in the North West. It was set up for exactly like you said. There version of Rescue.
 
I agree it really can delay response times of the special Equiptment if the company has to retun to quarters to pick up the second piece. Check out meridan ct they just got a new seagrave tiller, very similar to the FDNY's tillers however what they did to get the extra storage was to spec the trailer out as a ladder pipe trailer. If you have a full pre piped water way it makes the ladder about 5 feet longer in the retracted position then one with out. Specing the longer trailer added an extra full width compartment on both sides . There ladder does not have a full length pre piped water only a pre piped bed section ladder pipe but it is the same length in the retracted position as a ladder with no pipe, another feature of the longer trailer is you can now walk clompletly around the ladder when it is in the bed with out climbing over it because there is now a few feet between the tip and the tillermans cab. The extra compartment might just be enough to fit the gear from the second piece

Despite this thread being a decade old, the rescue tiller idea is still going. I recently came across Asheville, NC's new Rescue 3, a 2024 tractor-drawn KME.

Is this an aerial ladder also or just a rescue truck?

There's a handful of them around. There slowly gaining popularity for 1 reason or another. I'd say probably less then a dozen country wide. I know Orange County Fl and several other FL depts uses a standard semi for there SOC support unit. Looks like a soda or beer delivery semi with roll up doors but speced for fire use.

I’ve saw on other sites pictures of other departments like LA where they used them for Rescue rigs and Haz May rigs. My guess is this type of rig has more compartment space and a top storage area. I also saw one that had a heavy duty like tow truck hoist mounted on top by where the turntable should be.

I dont think they dont necessarily have more compartment space, but they do have more pass thru compartments compared to the average tiller. The average tiller has ladders stored back to front and that kills a lot of space.So cubic footage may be close. The 1 thing that does come to mind and its both a positive and a negative is weight capacity. You gain a lot of weight carrying capacity by not carrying a ladder, turntable and associated components, but your still limited by the axle weight of the tiller tires. There only single tires back there, compared to dual or quads on a standard trailer.
Im not against it, if it works for them great. In today's world you can pretty much spec out a rig to do anything you want if you've got the money to back it up. I saw a Sutphen 100 platform for an oil field in Northern Canada, in Ohio as it was being built and was almost ready for delivery. This thing had a 8 or 10,000 gpm pump, 4 remote monitors 1 on each corner of the body, in addition to the 2 on the bucket, I think it was a 1000 gallon foam tank and 1 or 2 smaller foam tanks. Our salesman told us that they had a hard time getting the pump certified because it was moving so much water, the pond was draining faster then it was refilling. They had to get another engine, that was ready for testing and fill the pond as they were pump testing the tower.

I think you may be right. The site is called Tractor Drawn Aerial which talks all things tiller and I think they do tda training also. So its not out of the realm of impossiblility that auto correct put in aerial even if it wasn't intended. Just happened to me. I typed impossibility and autocorrect helped me by putting elite in for some stupid reason. Almost didn't catch it.
