What color helmet front pieces did the members of the tcu wear. Gotta love those side facing seats.

I wish someone had a still of L31 going out on the BBC special...the video is taken from above on you can count all 8 men on the rig...sidesteps, sitting on the turntable etc!

Does anyone know how many guys the FDNY would have riding on a tour? In one of the pics of engine 82 going out i can see 3 or 4 guys on the rear of the rig behind the hose bed and the rig looks like a 6 man closed cab. So if there was FFs on the backstep and cab that would make 9 or 10 guys on the engine,

With all this talk about the " War Years", I remember in the mid-60s when Engine 248 had a relatively new Mack CF pumper with a closed cab and open "mother-in law" seats.  Our rig was taken away from us and sent to Engine 244 in Coney Island as Coney Island was deemed to be more an area of unrest than Flatbush.  We ( Engine 248) had to operate with Engine 244's open cab American LaFrance until Engine 244 was ultimately disbanded due to lack of fire duty and the demise of Coney Island.  Our Captain worked long and hard to get our original rig back and ultimately suceeded.
The rest is history: Engine 244 was disbanded and Engine 248 later led the city in occupied structural workers.

When did E-244 ever have an open cab American LaFrance ???? I do remember them having an old open cab [pre-1952] Ward LaFrance with doors. Also, the city has changed a lot in the past few years. For example, the 15th & 20th Battalions in the Bronx see a lot more work than the 14th Battalion.  :-X

I rode with Engine 248 from 1964 to 1973 and I would guess the rig swap was around 1965-6.  It was an open cab but had a plywood roof (temporary) over the driver and officer.

Just curious: If E.85 was reformed to create L.53 on City Island, what companies were used to create E.66 and L.61 in Co-op City?
I believe 27-2 became L.58.

Engine 41-2 was disbanded on January 17, 1974 and Engine 66 was established on January 19, 1974.
Engine 50-2 was disbanded on March 23, 1974 and Ladder 61 was established on the same day.
Ladder 27-2 was disbanded on November 6, 1972 and Ladder 58 was established on the same day.

It’s only been 15 years since I posted the screenshots from the BBC program in this thread. Now BBC has enhanced 6 minutes of the documentary.
