That is correct ...the original concept was that the Tin House's would be taken down & moved to other areas as the city continued to need Fire protection in other areas as the Firestorm moved.......the House's were never moved though & unfortunately the busy ENG's who occupied them fell victim to the bean counter's....at least the LAD's were spared....i covered in 232 on & off for awhile  prior to the closing.... great place.

Can't understand why the city sold this building.  I recognize that  that the foundation had to be reapired years after the sale, but still.

From an historical perspective of outstanding civic structures, they should have kept it.

Does anybody know if there was a strategic firefighting reason for abandoning it?

Coudln't find a reason to move out of 87 Lafayette firehouse in 1965.  E 31 was not disbanded when they vacated their firehouse.  They were moved to E 7 and then to E 55.  They served for 7 more years before they were disbanded in 1972.  Bn 2 moved to E 7, too.  The department shut the firehouse not the companies.

  If you look at the far lower right corner of the top photo you can see the Division Chief's door at the rear (exp. 3/4) corner of the firehouse. It's at the basement level. ;)

  This was the original home of L18, then Combination Engine 50, E50 & L32, E50 & L19, Div. 6 moved in there next and during the "War Years" E50 ran out of there as a double co. along with L19 & Div. 6.

Gman noted E 53's old quarters at 175 E 104th St earlier. They responded from this firehouse from 1885-1974. 





The firehouse, at 175 East 104th Street, was built in 1883 and 1884 and covered the area bounded by Fifth and First Avenues and 96th and 116th Streets. The fire company moved into the building in January 1885, and responded to about 154 fires in the district during its first year of operation.

E 158 - Original quarters  - 1905-1931 - 22 De Hart Ave  Mariners Harbor SI  - appears to be still occupied as multiple dwelling.

  Ladder 49's original 1913 vintage firehouse was at 1079 Nelson Ave. which is directly behind this house. L49 ran out of 1080 Ogden from 1947-1979.

Story about this firehouse and NY Giants.  Bobby Thompson, a power hitting outfielder for the NY Giants, grew up on SI and went to Curtis HS.  His brother worked in E 154 as a fireman in the early 1950s.  Bobby Thompson hit the "home run heard around the world" to win the pennant in 1951 over the Brooklyn Dodgers in the third game of a 3 game playoff - bottom of the 9th inning, down by 2 runs.  His brother was working.  Bobby left the Polo Grounds after the game and took subway and ferry to SI and spent night celebrating with his brother and the members of E 154 in this firehouse.  The Shot Heard 'Round The World
