Engine 37 Ladder 40 Cop/Fire Race

Starting in 1977 as a bet between two friends Dan Caffery, FDNY and Bill Myers, NYPD over beers after the Boston Marathon, the FDNY NYPD Cop Fire race has been an annual tradition in Harlem ever since. Come join us as we find out who is the Fastest of the Badges!

Engine 37 and Ladder 40 are hosting the 43rd annual FDNY vs NYPD Five Mile Race through upper Manhattan. Every year New York's Bravest takes on New York's Finest to see who is the fastest that New York has to offer. This may be a race to see who is New York's Fastest, but we encourage all to join. Support your local firehouse or precinct! All are welcome to join in the race! We meet at 1573 Madison Ave New York, New York. There you can pickup your packet and head to the starting line. The race begins in Central Park on the 102nd Street Transverse and makes one southern loop of the park with the finish line back on the 102nd Street Transverse. Meet us back at Packet Pickup for refreshments, times, and award ceremony.

UNSPOKEN COURAGE

Firefighters Commemorated

“Unspoken courage” was how artist Pomm Hepner could best describe the quality she saw in New York City’s firemen in 9/11 rescue operations.

That inspired her painting by the same name, of which limited edition prints were dedicated this spring to the Uniformed Firefighters Association of Greater New York and to six firehouses that lost men in the World Trade Center tragedy.

The acclaimed watercolor artist from Glendale, California, had joined other Scientology Volunteer Ministers in New York during relief efforts in September. Initially, she created a large, three-panel, transportable mural of the American flag. Moved by the valor she observed in firefighters at Ground Zero, she painted “Unspoken Courage,” which depicts a fireman and two children in front of Old Glory with ashen remains of the World Trade Center towers scattered at their feet.

The print was also placed on the Memorial Wall under construction at the Fire Academy, commemorating all fire fighters who lost their lives on 9/11.

“The painting is an acknowledgment to all heroes who work daily to keep us safe from harm,” the artist said during the presentation of the special edition print to Engine 40, Ladder 35—words that would be echoed at the other firehouses. “I painted this work from my heart. It shows our gratitude. It shows you that we, as Volunteer Ministers of the Church of Scientology, are with you, and we’ll continue to be with you.”

New York City Fire Department Lieutenant John McCole joined the Volunteer Ministers in the presentation of a print to another FDNY unit, Engine 37, Ladder 40 in Harlem. McCole, who had been off duty and supervising ministerial students at the Church of Scientology on 82nd Street since before 9 a.m. on September 11, had rushed to the heart of rescue operations, where he saved the life of a man trapped on the 6th floor of the north tower. He remained at Ground Zero for days in the rescue efforts, and personally knew 80 of the firefighters who died in the line of duty.

He said he still takes any time he can to help other firefighters in the city.

“It’s hard to comprehend the level of destruction and loss these men have faced,” said McCole. “I want to let them know that I do know, I feel the same things—and I know they understand me, too. And that I appreciate and respect them more than words can say.”

Stephan Hittman, deputy fire commissioner, and director of fire and life safety with the New York Fire Department, said of the art presentations, “This really means a lot to us, to all the men. It keeps us focused on our ideals.”

20-year FDNY veteran… Also worked as a Hollywood stuntman… Played running back for the FDNY football team… Former star at Brown University was posthumously inducted into the university’s Hall of Fame… Was off-duty when the Towers were hit and joined the rescue efforts.

WEST HARLEM/MANHATTANVILLE

Manhattanville (also known as West Harlem or West Central Harlem) is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Manhattan bordered on the north by 135th Street; on the south by 122nd and 125th Streets; on the west by Hudson River; and on the east by Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard and the campus of City College.

The village of Manhattanville was founded in 1806 and quickly gained prominence as an outpost of the city. The village grew around the crossroads of Bloomingdale Road and Manhattan Street, now roughly Broadway and 125th Street. The village's original streets were laid out by Jacob Schieffelin and other wealthy merchants, mostly Quakers, who had country seats in the area. The town thrived as a result of the development of Manhattan Street from the Hudson River, whose convenient access also became a crucial catalyst in the growth of the older village of Harlem to the southeast on the Harlem River. Situated at approximately the same latitude, Harlem and Manhattanville flourished together throughout the 19th century as the two most prominent villages in upper Manhattan.

2019 HARLEM FIRE W/6 FATALITIES




On Wednesday, May 8, 2019, at approximately 0141 hours, police responded to a 911 call of a residential fire inside of 2441 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard (Frederick Samuel Houses), apartment #5G, within the confines of the 32 Precinct (PSA #6). Upon extinguishment of the fire by FDNY personnel, responding officers observed 6 persons, unconscious and unresponsive, within the rear bedroom areas. EMS responded to the location and pronounced the 6 aided persons deceased at the scene; they are a 45-year-old female, a 33-year-old male, an 11-year-old female, an 8-year-old male, a 6-year-old female, and a 3-year-old male. The cause of the fire is to be determined by NYC Fire Marshall. There does not appear to be any signs of criminality at this time. The investigation remains ongoing. LOUDLABS NEWS NYC
