Engine Company 238 and Ladder Company 106 wanted to paint a patriotic display on their doors to show Greenpoint that, no matter what happens in modern-day life, the firefighters will protect each and every citizen. They happened to be parked in front of Colossal’s HQ one day, so a member stopped in to talk about the project. “The rest, they say, is history,” the companies told us. “Now every time we return to quarters from a run, seeing that waving flag brings a smile to our face.”

Finest vs Bravest Take Two

BY THE GREENLINE POSTED ON FEBRUARY 1, 2020

NYPD vs FDNY 2020 trophy web

The team from FDNY’s Engine 238 & Ladder 106 played a thrilling game of basketball against the team from NYPD’s 94th precinct at M.S. 126. The NYPD won the trophy by one point.

New York City’s Finest (aka the NYPD, in particular the 94th precinct) went up against New York City’s Bravest (aka the FDNY, specifically Engine 238 & Ladder 106) faced each other on John Ericsson Middle School 126’s basketball court for their 2nd annual fundraising basketball game. It was a close game. The final score was 59 (NYPD) to 58 (FDNY).

GREENPOINT

OLD MAP 1.jpg

How It Got Its Name - Purchased in 1638 by the Dutch from the Indians, Greenpoint, along with Williamsburg, was part of the mid-17th-century town known as Bos-ijck (Bushwick), meaning "the wooden district." Brooklyn’s northernmost point was once covered in trees, hence "Green Point," now Greenpoint.

Greenpoint

Greenpoint is the northernmost neighborhood in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, in the U.S. state of New York. It is bordered on the southwest by Williamsburg at Bushwick Inlet Park and McCarren Park; on the southeast by the Brooklyn–Queens Expressway and East Williamsburg; on the north by Newtown Creek and the neighborhood of Long Island City in Queens; and on the west by the East River. The neighborhood has a large Polish immigrant and Polish-American community, containing many Polish restaurants, markets, and businesses, and it is often referred to as Little Poland.

Originally farmland – many of the farm owners' family names, such as Meserole (Messerole) and Calyer, are current street names – the residential core of Greenpoint was built on parcels divided during the 19th century, with rope factories and lumber yards lining the East River to the west, while the northeastern section along the Newtown Creek through East Williamsburg became an industrial maritime area.

Greenpoint has long held a reputation of being a working class and immigrant neighborhood, and it initially attracted families and workers with its abundance of factory jobs, heavy industry and manufacturing, and longshoreman or dock work. Since the early 2000s, a building boom in the neighborhood has made the neighborhood increasingly a center of nightlife and gentrification, and a 2005 rezoning enabled the construction of high density residential buildings on the East River waterfront. There have also been efforts to reclaim the rezoned East River waterfront for recreational use and also to extend a continuous promenade into the Newtown Creek area.

Police and crime

Greenpoint is patrolled by the 94th Precinct of the NYPD, located at 100 Meserole Avenue. The 94th Precinct ranked 50th safest out of 69 patrol areas for per-capita crime in 2010. As of 2018, with a non-fatal assault rate of 34 per 100,000 people, Greenpoint and Williamsburg's rate of violent crimes per capita is less than that of the city as a whole. The incarceration rate of 305 per 100,000 people is lower than that of the city as a whole.

The 94th Precinct has a lower crime rate than in the 1990s, with crimes across all categories having decreased by 72.9% between 1990 and 2018. The precinct reported 1 murder, 6 rapes, 63 robberies, 115 felony assaults, 141 burglaries, 535 grand larcenies, and 62 grand larcenies auto in 2018.

Fire safety

The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) operates two fire stations in Greenpoint.[62] Engine Co. 238/Ladder Co. 106 is located at 205 Greenpoint Avenue and serves most of the neighborhood.[63] The southern part of Greenpoint is served by Engine Co. 229/Ladder Co. 146, located at 75 Richardson Street.

PODCAST The history of the Brooklyn neighborhood of Greenpoint and the oft-polluted Newtown Creek.
Greenpoint, Brooklyn
, has a surprising history of both bucolic green pastures and rancid oil patches. Before the 19th century this corner of Brooklyn was owned by only a few families with farms (and the slaves that tended them).
But with the future borough of Brooklyn expanding at a great rate, Greenpoint (or Green Point, as they used to call it) could no longer remain private.
Industries like ship building and petroleum completely changed the character of Greenpoint’s waterfront, while its unique, alphabetically-named grid of streets held an extraordinary collection of townhouses.
By the late 19th century, Polish immigrants would move on the major avenues, developing a ‘Little Poland’ that still characterizes the neighborhood.
Today big changes are coming to Greenpoint thanks to new housing developments. How will these new arrivals fare next to the notoriously toxic Newtown Creek, a body of water heavily abused by industry?

Community Group Needs $250K to Turn Historic Williamsburg Firehouse Into Community Center

A long-vacant firehouse that has sat collecting dust for years has not lost its importance to many residents of Williamsburg. Now, thanks to help from a community group, it just might get a second lease on life.

The Firehouse North Brooklyn Community Center seeks to convert the old firehouse at 134 Wythe Avenue into a community center for Williamsburg that will serve as a hub for community advocacy and social justice, alongside featuring original arts and culture programming. The effort to convert the firehouse into a community headquarters goes back at least to 2007, when the city put out a request for proposals, as we reported at the time.

The firehouse, which was built in the 19th century, was dubbed the “People’s Firehouse” in the 1970s after a group of determined Williamsburgers protested its imminent closure by holing up inside the building for months without leaving, which successfully saved the fire company. The firehouse closed for good in 2003.

The building has lovely high ceilings and ornate original tin ceilings, and will need some sprucing up before it’s ready for use. The Firehouse North Brooklyn Community Center has a full vision to repurpose all parts of the important space.

The first floor, where the fire trucks once parked, will be turned into a performance and gathering space. The second floor will host offices for the community group, and the third floor is being considered as a flexible space that will be awarded to groups in Williamsburg who contribute to the community.

Time is running out, however. The group has until June to raise $250,000 toward its fundraising goal of $2.8 million, said Diana Zelvin, Firehouse North Brooklyn Community Center’s development director.

If they can do it, the city will transfer the property to the community group and contribute $1.092 million to the cause, and the state will provide $650,000.

Major supporters of the project include Borough President Eric Adams, U.S. Representative Carolyn Maloney, and real estate developer Toby Moskowits, who is spearheading a major office development nearby.

Once the group owns the building, the redevelopment process will take around two years, Zelvin said.

The firehouse sits in an area of Williamsburg that was rezoned in 2005, leading to an explosion of new buildings. It is close to some of the newest developments in Williamsburg, including the William Vale Hotel (among several new lodging spots), and Bushwick Inlet Park. Williamsburg has become a destination in need of community gathering space, said Zelvin. Particularly with the L train shutdown looming, a new community center could serve as a catalyst for the neighborhood’s next phase, she added.
