I think there is a little gadget that is called a "Scan Disk". It gets plugged into the computer and the threads can be permanetly saved. They sell for about $10 or $15.00 and a lot of info can be saved.

Maybe somebody can add to this and help me out a little.

68jk09, nfd2004 is correct. I recently purchased a SCAN DISK from CVS....You can also purchase it from Radio Shack or any electronic store...There are different sizes regarding how much information that can be saved on the disk. Before I did all the alarm assignments for 319, 274 & 129 , I made the purchase. Every night after I typed a page or two, I would plug the SCAN DISK into the side of my labtop and saved what I had done.

It is worth the $ 15.00 or more, again depending on what size of storage you want.

Just saying there is so much HISTORY on this site. Gotta get it together before it is gone. Guys cannot post forever, we will die someday.
.......Very true...my question for the techno inclined.....Is there  a possibility that all this info on here could be lost somehow due to a virus or crash or whatever ?.......what about what is on our individual computers ? Does anything have to be done to insure the longevity of the material ?

Chief,

I suggest you send a PM to Tom Benedict.  He probably has the site backed up

Nice history of 8/2's. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe their current quarters was the first house ever built under a high-rise, at least in New York.

fdny1075k - I think you are right about E8/L2 firehouse.  When built, I believe it was the first firehouse to be built as part of a high rise.  There was a notation in WNYF about the new quarters when it went into service - about 1960 - 1st known firehouse to be built as part of high rise complex.  I will try to find it.

Also incorporated into that high rise, besides the firehouse, is the 17th Precinct Station House which is right next door as you head towards 3rd Avenue.

I stayed at the doubletree at the corner across the street from the house during our get together last fall. Interesting place, how man floors do they have?

I spoke with my father (FF w/2 Truck from 1955-1969) and he says that the firehouse has only two (2) floors. In addition, there was a time when the Assistant Chief for Manhattan and da Bronx (pre-Boro Commands) also put up in their quarters.  They parked their car in the single bay that the 8th Battalion now uses.

Engine 10/Ladder 15  - modernization of firehouse - quarters 73 Water St received face-lift in 1962 (firehouse in-service from 1931-1980) - firehouse razed in 1980

I saw A/C August Beekman  (Soon to be Comm.) going in and out of there numerous times in the early 70's.

So these quarters were re-done in 1962 and then the station was razed in 1980? Seems like a waste of money.

You can be sure that the city made back that money plus some when they sold the land. Especially in that area.
